Day 2 (05.09)

  • Jiang Huihua from China set 2 World Records by winning in the Women’s 49 kg category. She took all six attempts to perform the best lifts in Clean & Jerk of 120 kg and a total of 215 kg.

  • Li Fabin from China also broke the Junior World Record in totals by performing 308 kg.

Day 4 (07.09)

The 4th day of the Qualifying competition in the Men’s 67 kg division was full of no-lift attempts. To be more precise: more than 60% of all attempts in Snatch and around 50% in the Clean & Jerk exercise were failed by competitors. The reason is that this competition is simply a qualifying one and this weight division isn’t considered to be Olympic.

We saw lots of red lights in the overall scoreboard today. For instance, an athlete from Turkey Hardal Ferdi failed his Snatch and C&J, Chinese He Yueji also wasn’t successful in Snatch with all attempts, and Goga Chkheidze from Georgia failed C&J in three attempts as well.

Day 8 (11.09)

The C&J World Record was beaten by the lifter from Indonesia Rahmat Erwin who lifted an incredible 209 kg. He managed to defeat the previous C&J world record of 208 kg made by the Bulgarian Karlos Nasar at the WWC in 2021.

Day 9 (13.09)

This competition day brought us two world record holders in the category of Women’s 71 kg

Chinese Liao Guifang beat two Senior World Records: in Clean&Jerk of 153 kg and total of 273 kg. It was a powerful and confident win that left zero chances for her opponents.

Olivia Reeves from the USA set two Junior World Records: she lifted 142 kg in Clean&Jerk, and a total of 253 kg.

Day 10 (14.09)

This day we saw another bright world record break in Snatch, namely the Junior World Record, by the Armenian lifter Garik Karapetyan. He lifted 183 kg and gained the silver medal.

Day 11 (15.09)

Xiaomei Liang from China beat the Senior World Record in Clean&Jerk by lifting 1 kilo more of the current record itself – 159 kg.

What Is It?

The IWF World Championships in Riyadh is one of the biggest events on the 2023 competition calendar and is a mandatory contest to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. This IWF contest is the 88th world weightlifting championship that will host a total of 719 competitors from 120 nations.  This time the lifters’ list is going to be incredible: lots of famous big names are going to lift in Riyadh.

1. When Does It Take Place?

This time, the next 2023 World Weightlifting Championships will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on 4-17 of September.

2. Who Participates?

It’s expected that 719 contenders will join this great event, namely 20 current world champions, 13 Tokyo gold medalists, and 17 world record holders will be present in this Championship in Riyadh.

However, several well-known world record holders and Olympic champions are intended to weigh in without lifting at the contest. They are a Bulgarian lifter Karlos Nasar, Mirabai Chanu from India, and Lesman Paredes from Bahrain.  Other athletes also took this option, among them are Tokyo champion Maude Charron from Canada, European champion Loredana Toma from Romania, and Angel Rusev from Bulgaria.
