Karapetyan Garik

Weightlifting’s Next Big Star

Garik Karapetyan was born on June 11th, 2003, in Gyumri, Armenia and he competes in the 102 kg weight class. He has set Junior World Records and won medals at major competitions. Garik follows in the footsteps of his father, Aleksan Karapetyan, who is a former international weightlifter for both Armenia and Australia. Garik trains with coach Pashik Alaverdyan and has quickly risen through the ranks. He aims for Olympic success and is inspired by his family’s weightlifting legacy.

Garik’s journey in weightlifting started when he was 8 and it was influenced by his father, Aleksan, who competed in the 1996 and 2000 Olympics. Aleksan’s guidance was crucial and helped Garik develop his skills and passion for the sport early on.

In 2023, Garik made a splash at the European Championships in Yerevan and won gold in the 102 kg category. He dominated the snatch, clean and jerk, and total lifts, so his debut was impressive, to say the least. Later that year, he competed at the World Championships in Riyadh and won a silver medal in the snatch with a lift of 183 kg. He has also set a Junior World record with that lift and finished 5th overall with a total of 393 kg.  He had some setbacks, like struggling with the clean and jerk, but his performances have shown his potential.

He has won 3 consecutive Junior World Competitions from 2021 to 2023. His 2023 performance in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he lifted a total of 378 kg, cemented his reputation as a top junior lifter.

Karapetyan’s resilience and determination keep him focused on his goals and as he continues to compete, he’s the name to watch in the weightlifting world.
