2024 IWF World Cup: Full Results, Event Review & Final Stats Recap (Phuket, Thailand)

What Is It?

The 2024 IWF World Cup is the culminating competition in the qualification events for the Olympic Games. It’s also one of the two mandatory competitions for weightlifters who aim to participate in the Games, along with the World Championships in Riyadh.

Besides this tournament, athletes can get their slots to Paris by competing at the 2022 World Championships in Bogota; choose some of five 2023 continental championships (the Pan-American, European, Asian, African, and Oceania events); or among the two 2023 IWF Grand Prix events – the initial one in La Havana and the second one in Doha; and the last continental championships in 2024, namely Asian and European ones.

According to the Qualification demands: only 10 athletes in each of the 10 weight divisions, five for men and five for women, will get their spots from a ranking qualifying list.

What about the spot arrangement for the Olympic games, there are 120 quotas in Paris 2024. The top 10 in each weight category will earn a ticket, with 20 athletes from the hosting country and 10 representatives from other countries.

When Does It Take Place?

The 2024 IWF World Cup, the last Paris Qualification tournament will be held from 31 March till 11 April in Phuket, Thailand.

Who Participates?

It’s estimated that more than 1500 people, including athletes, coaches, and staff members will attend this tournament in Phuket.

The IWF World Cup event is around the corner. It will be the last qualification tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The World Cup competition in Phuket is extremely important for top-class athletes to get the qualification and gain the spots for the summer Olympic Games.

By the way, this is a compulsory event each weightlifter is obliged to compete in alongside meeting the rest of the IWF events and participation requirements.

The standards are high as the competition requires excellent preparation, ultimate dedication, and high performance level from each athlete. The great game is approaching, so let’s focus on this prominent.

  • PANG Un Chol became the category’s winner: he lifted 118 kg in Snatch, 152 kg in Clean & Jerk, and got 270 kg in total.
  • CHOMCHUEN Natthawat from Thailand became the silver medalist with 119 kg in Snatch, 150 kg in Clean & Jerk, and 269 kg in total.
  • LAI Gia Thanh from Vietnam closed the Top 3 with 120 kg in Snatch, 148 kg in Clean & Jerk, and 268 kg in total.

Men’s 61 kg:

  • Li Fabin from China became the category’s leader: he did 146 kg in Snatch, 166 kg in Clean & Jerk, with a total of 312 kg.
  • Hampton Morris from the USA took silver thanks to the Snatch of 127 kg, 176 kg in Clean & Jerk, and a total of 303 kg.
  • The bronze holder became Pak Myong Jin: he snatched 131 kg, did Clean & Jerk of 170 kg, and a total of 301 kg.

Men’s 67 kg:

  • RI Won Ju won the tough battle with the incredible lifts of 144 kg in Snatch,  189 kg in Clean & Jerk, and a total of 333 kg.
  • MASSIDDA Sergio from Italy won silver for his country by lifting 145 kg, 172 kg in Clean & Jerk, and 317 kg overall.

On the sixth day of the tournament, we’re going to spectate tough competitions between lifters in the category from Group A – Women’s 64 kg.

Snatch results:

  • RIM Un Sim took the gold medal after lifting 114 kg at the third attempt.
  • RI Suk lifted 108 kg and clinched silver for her country.
  • SAMULIAK Svitlana from Ukraine became third with 101 kg on the third lift.

  • RIM Un Sim reigned the weight category in the exercise as well by lifting 144 kg.
  • RI Suk took silver with 140 kg at the first attempt.

On the fifth day of the tournament, we’re going to spectate the competitions between athletes in two categories from Group A – Men’s 67 kg and the Men’s 73 kg.

  • MASSIDDA Sergio from Italy took gold by lifting 145 kg on the third attempt.
  • RI Won Ju lifted 144 kg on the last attempt and won silver.

  • JUNIANSYAH Rizki from Indonesia took second place with the result of 164 kg.

On the fourth day of the World Cup in Phuket, Women’s category, the 59-kg weight division, was competing to get the winning spots for the Olympic Games qualification.

Snatch results:

  • KIM Il Gyong lifted 108 kg  from the third attempt and won gold.
  • LUO Shifang from China won silver with 108 kg at the last lift.
  • CHARRON Maude G from Canada became third with 106 kg she lifted at the third attempt.

  • LUO Shifang from China succeeded in lifting 140 kg.
  • KIM Il Gyong won gold with a lift of 132 kg.

02.04 (Day 3)

On the third day of the World Cup in Phuket,  Women’s category, the 55-kg weight division, and Men’s 61 kg, were competing to get the winning spots for the Olympic Games qualification.

  • Li Fabin from China lifted 146 kg from the third attempt and won gold.
  • Irawan Eko Yuli from Indonesia won silver with 133 kg.
  • Ceniza John Febuar from the Phillipines became third with 132 kg on the second lift.

  • Hampton Morris from the USA succeeded in lifting 176 kg by setting a new world record.
  • Silachai Teerapong from Thailand won silver with a lift of 171 kg.

  • Won Hyon Sim from the Women’s 45-kg weight class set new Senior World records in Snatch of 87 kg, Clean & Jerk of 109 kg, and total of 196 kg, by improving her prior record set a the 2024 Asian Championships.

  • Chinese lifter Hou Zhihui from the 49-kg weight division beat her prior World Records in total of 217 kg, and Snatch of 97 kg.

  • Hampton Morris from the 61-kg weight division claimed the first Senior World Record for the United States in over 50 years after jerking 176 kilograms.

  • REEVES Olivia from the USA competing in the 71-kg weight category succeeded in setting the C&J American Record by 150 kg.

  • LIU Huanhua from China competing in the 102-kg weight division set two World Records in Clean & Jerk of 232 kg and a total of 413 kg.

Final thoughts

The IWF World Cup in Phuket has just finished where we were spectating the performance of the best weightlifters in the world. This was the last qualifying event for Paris 2024. Numerous world records have been set, with world records broken in particular Olympic weight classes.

Having analyzed the overall performance in all divisions, the Chinese team succeeded to prevail over other nations: China won 26 medals in total, with 10 gold, 9 silver, and 7 bronze medals. The second country was South Korea – 11 medals overall, 3 gold, 3 silver, and 5 bronze medals. The third spot moved to Canada with 10 bronze medals overall.

For you to remember, 120 athletes will compete in the Paris 2024. 

Considering the NOC requirements, a maximum of one athlete in each of the 10 weight classes can qualify for the Games. While France as a host country will be allocated four quotas: two for men and two for women. There’s also a limit of three lifters per gender. The major way to Paris is determined via a top-10 ranking in each of the 10 Olympic categories, with the highest total weight in the competition.

The weightlifting Paris 2024 qualification period for the OQR concludes on 28 April 2024. The IWF will publish the OQR of each Olympic category at the end of the qualification period on the official website. This ranking will be based on the best total results in Snatch, and Clean & Jerk the athletes manage to lift in the seven competitions necessary for participation.

So, now let’s wait as the NOC representatives will notify the IWF of the selected athletes in each Olympic category who are ranked in the Top 10 of OQR. We’ll see who will compete at the Olympic Games in Paris and conquer. Let’s witness the lifters vying for triumph at the greatest event in the world of weightlifting.
