Lopez Lopez Yeison

Colombian Weightlifting Prodigy and Record Holder

Yeison Lopez was born on September 1, 1999, in Istmina, Chocó, Colombia, and although young, he’s already known for his impressive results. Lopez has set several youth world records and has multiple international titles, including the 2016 IWF Junior World Championships. His rise from a tough background to becoming a top athlete shows how dedicated and resilient he is.

Lopez’s early life was tough. His family moved from Istmina to Cali to escape violence and find better opportunities. In Cali, Lopez found his passion for weightlifting after seeing a newspaper photo of his cousin, Wílmer Torress, who was also a weightlifter. Starting at 13, Lopez faced challenges like long walks to training sessions, but his hard work paid off.

His big break came at the 2016 IWF Junior World Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia. There, he set youth world records in the 77 kg category with a total lift of 346 kg, including a 156 kg snatch and a 190 kg clean and jerk, and showed he was a major talent.

Lopez kept winning, picking up gold medals at different international events. By 18, he had claimed titles at 4 Youth World Championships and 4 Pan American Games, with a total of 24 gold medals. A highlight was the 2017 World U17 Championships in Tokyo, where he set a new world record in the 77 kg category with a 356 kg total lift.

His parents have supported his weightlifting journey and he managed to overcome financial struggles to continue his training. His mother’s support has been crucial to his success.

When he’s not lifting, Lopez is studying finance and international business, and wants to use his success to help his family and community. His story is an excellent example of turning challenges into triumphs.
