2024 IWF World Cup: Full Results, Event Review & Final Stats Recap (Phuket, Thailand)

What Is It?

The 2024 IWF World Cup is the culminating competition in the qualification events for the Olympic Games. It’s also one of the two mandatory competitions for weightlifters who aim to participate in the Games, along with the World Championships in Riyadh.

Besides this tournament, athletes can get their slots to Paris by competing at the 2022 World Championships in Bogota; choose some of five 2023 continental championships (the Pan-American, European, Asian, African, and Oceania events); or among the two 2023 IWF Grand Prix events – the initial one in La Havana and the second one in Doha; and the last continental championships in 2024, namely Asian and European ones.

According to the Qualification demands: only 10 athletes in each of the 10 weight divisions, five for men and five for women, will get their spots from a ranking qualifying list.

What about the spot arrangement for the Olympic games, there are 120 quotas in Paris 2024. The top 10 in each weight category will earn a ticket, with 20 athletes from the hosting country and 10 representatives from other countries.

When Does It Take Place?

The 2024 IWF World Cup, the last Paris Qualification tournament will be held from 31 March till 11 April in Phuket, Thailand.

Who Participates?

It’s estimated that more than 1500 people, including athletes, coaches, and staff members will attend this tournament in Phuket.

General Review

The IWF World Cup event is around the corner. It will be the last qualification tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympics. This event is essential and highly prestigious for weightlifters who consider this competition as a milestone in their sports path.

The World Cup competition in Phuket is extremely important for top-class athletes to get the qualification and gain the spots for the summer Olympic Games. By the way, this is a compulsory event each weightlifter is obliged to compete in alongside meeting the rest of the IWF events and participation requirements.

The standards are high as the competition requires excellent preparation, ultimate dedication, and high performance level from each athlete. The great game is approaching, so let’s focus on this prominent.

As the event approaches, the focus is clear—earn a place at the Paris Olympics. The Phuket World Cup represents not just a competition but a dream of Olympic glory.

Men’s 55 kg:

  • PANG Un Chol became the category’s winner: he lifted 118 kg in Snatch, 152 kg in Clean & Jerk, and got 270 kg in total.
  • CHOMCHUEN Natthawat from Thailand became the silver medalist with 119 kg in Snatch, 150 kg in Clean & Jerk, and 269 kg in total.
  • LAI Gia Thanh from Vietnam closed the Top 3 with 120 kg in Snatch, 148 kg in Clean & Jerk, and 268 kg in total.

Men’s 61 kg:

  • Li Fabin from China became the category’s leader: he did 146 kg in Snatch, 166 kg in Clean & Jerk, with a total of 312 kg.
  • Hampton Morris from the USA took silver thanks to the Snatch of 127 kg, 176 kg in Clean & Jerk, and a total of 303 kg.
  • The bronze holder became Pak Myong Jin: he snatched 131 kg, did Clean & Jerk of 170 kg, and a total of 301 kg.

Men’s 67 kg:

  • RI Won Ju won the tough battle with the incredible lifts of 144 kg in Snatch,  189 kg in Clean & Jerk, and a total of 333 kg.
  • MASSIDDA Sergio from Italy won silver for his country by lifting 145 kg, 172 kg in Clean & Jerk, and 317 kg overall.

On the fifth day of the tournament, we’re going to spectate the competitions between athletes in two categories from Group A – Men’s 67 kg and the Men’s 73 kg.

Men’s Cat. 67 kg:

Snatch results:

  • MASSIDDA Sergio from Italy took gold by lifting 145 kg on the third attempt.
  • RI Won Ju lifted 144 kg on the last attempt and won silver.
  • YASIN Mohammad from Indonesia took bronze with 133 kg on the second lift.

Clean & Jerk results: 

  • RI Won Ju became a gold winner due to the lift of 189 kg on the third attempt setting a new World Record.
  • MURATBEK UULU Ishimbek from Kyrgyzstan did 172 kg and clinched a silver medal.
  • MASSIDDA Sergio from Italy took bronze due to a 172-kg lift.

Total results:

  • RI Won Ju won gold with a total of 333 kg.
  • MASSIDDA Sergio from Italy became a silver medalist with a total of  317 kg. 
  • MURATBEK UULU Ishimbek from Kyrgyzstan closed the Top 3 by getting 294 kg in total.

Men’s Cat. 73 kg:

Snatch results:

  • SHI Zhiyong from China got gold by lifting 165 kg on the third attempt.
  • JUNIANSYAH Rizki from Indonesia took second place with the result of 164 kg.
  • ABDULLAH Rahmat Erwin from Indonesia closed the Top 3 with a lift of 160 kg on the second attempt.

Clean & Jerk results: 

  • JUNINSYAH Rizki from Indonesia did 201 kg on the second attempt by winning a gold medal.
  • ABDULLAH Rahmat Erwin from Indonesia became a silver medalist lifting 195 kg.
  • BAK Joohyo from South Korea clinched the bronze with a result of 195 kg on the second lift.

Total results:

  • JUNIANSYAH Rizki from Indonesia became a total winner in the category with a total of 365 kg setting a new World Record.
  • SHI Zhiyong from China finished with a result of 356 kg.

03.04 (Day 4)

On the fourth day of the World Cup in Phuket, Women’s category, the 59-kg weight division, was competing to get the winning spots for the Olympic Games qualification.

Women’s Cat. 59 kg:

Snatch results:

  • KIM Il Gyong lifted 108 kg  from the third attempt and won gold.
  • LUO Shifang from China won silver with 108 kg at the last lift.
  • CHARRON Maude G from Canada became third with 106 kg she lifted at the third attempt.

Clean & Jerk results: 

  • LUO Shifang from China succeeded in lifting 140 kg.
  • KIM Il Gyong won gold with a lift of 132 kg.
  • PEI Xinyi from China lifted 130 kg.

Total results:

  • LUO Shifang from China got the gold medal with a total result of 248 kg, thus setting a World Record.
  • KIM Il Gyong resulted in 240 kg and a silver medal.
  • CHARRON Maude G from Canada finished with 236 kg and third place in the weight class.

02.04 (Day 3)

On the third day of the World Cup in Phuket,  Women’s category, the 55-kg weight division, and Men’s 61 kg, were competing to get the winning spots for the Olympic Games qualification.

Snatch results:

  • Li Fabin from China lifted 146 kg from the third attempt and won gold.
  • Irawan Eko Yuli from Indonesia won silver with 133 kg.
  • Ceniza John Febuar from the Phillipines became third with 132 kg on the second lift.

Clean & Jerk results: 

  • Hampton Morris from the USA succeeded in lifting 176 kg by setting a new world record.
  • Silachai Teerapong from Thailand won silver with a lift of 171 kg.
  • Pak Myong Jin lifted 170 kg on the last attempt.

Total results:

  • Li Fabin from China got the gold medal with a total result of 312 kg.
  • Hampton Morris from the USA resulted in 303 kg and a silver medal.
  • Pak Myong Jin finished with 301 kg and third place in the weight class.

  • KANG Hyon Gyong got gold by lifting 103 kg on the third attempt.
  • CAMBEI Mihaela-Valentina from Romania took second place with the result of 91 kg.
  • Gallant Josee from Canada closed the Top 3 with a lift of 85 kg on the second lift.

  • KANG Hyon Gyong did 131 kg on the second attempt winning a gold medal.
  • SOROKHAIBAM Bindyarani Devi from India became a silver medalist lifting 113 kg.
  • CAMBEI Mihaela-Valentina from Romania clinched the bronze with a result of 110 kg on the third attempt.

On the second day of the tournament, we’re going to spectate tough competitions between lifters in the categories from Group A – Women’s 49 kg and Men’s 55 kg.

Women’s Cat. 49 kg:

Snatch results:

  • Hou Zhihui from China took the gold medal after lifting 97 kg at the second attempt.
  • Ri Song Gum lifted 97 kg and clinched silver for her country.
  • Jiang Huihua from China became third with 94 kg on the third try.

Clean & Jerk results:

  • Ri Song Gum reigned the weight category in the exercise by lifting 124 kg.
  • Hou Zhihui from China took silver with 120 kg at the third attempt.
  • Jiang Huihua from China finished third with the result of 114 kg.

Total results:

  • Ri Song Gum got two gold medals in all disciplines with a total of 221 kg.
  • Hou Zhihui from China became a silver medalist thanks to a total result of 217 kg.

On the first day of the competition, we’re going to spectate tough competitions between lifters in the category from Group A – Women’s 45 kg.

Snatch results:

  • Won Hyon Sim won gold in Snatch by lifting 87 kg.
  • My Phuong Khong from Vietnam became a silver medalist with a 76 kg lift.
  • Siriwimon Pramongkhol from Thailand became third with 75 kg.

  • Won Hyon Sim took gold performing 109 kg in this round.

  • Won Hyon Sim from the Women’s 45-kg weight class set new Senior World records in Snatch of 87 kg, Clean & Jerk of 109 kg, and total of 196 kg, by improving her prior record set a the 2024 Asian Championships.

  • Chinese lifter Hou Zhihui from the 49-kg weight division beat her prior World Records in total of 217 kg, and Snatch of 97 kg.
  • Ri Song Gum from the 49-kg weight division set a new World Record in a total of 221 kg.

Day 3

  • Hampton Morris from the 61-kg weight division claimed the first Senior World Record for the United States in over 50 years after jerking 176 kilograms.

  • LOPEZ LOPEZ Yeison from Colombia competing in the 89-kg weight category set a new World Record in Snatch by lifting 182 kg.

  • REEVES Olivia from the USA competing in the 71-kg weight category succeeded in setting the C&J American Record by 150 kg.

Day 10

  • LIU Huanhua from China competing in the 102-kg weight division set two World Records in Clean & Jerk of 232 kg and a total of 413 kg.

Final thoughts

The 2024 European Championships is the last chance for the leading athletes to preserve their quotas for the Olympic Games. This continental tournament will become one of the most dramatic battles of the whole 4 years.
