What Is It?

Grand Prix II in Doha, Qatar is one of the important qualifying events for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. This IWF competition hosts over 700 weightlifters all over the world. Besides this World Cup, other Paris qualifier events are left that are the following: the 2024 Oceania Championships is run from February 23-25 in Auckland, New Zealand; and the final Olympic qualifier, the IWF World Cup in Pattaya, Thailand is going to be from March 31 to April 11.

When Does It Take Place?

This time, Grand Prix II runs from December 4 – 14 in Doha, Qatar.

Who Participates?

It’s expected that over 700 contenders will join this pivotal event, including current world champions, Olympic medalists, and world record holders.

The next-to-last competition day showed us tens of eye-grabbing moments in the Men’s 109-kg and Women’s 87-kg categories, as heavyweight divisions were on the podium on the Day 10. Each lifter was on the edge of their physical capabilities trying to lift heavier weights and make their country’s anthem sound on the award ceremony.

The battle between female weightlifters from the 59-kg class was pretty interesting and breathtaking. Division’s giants who are highly titled World and European Champions did a thrilling performance everyone expected.

Women’s 59 kg

Snatch results:

  • Luo Shifang from China made 108 kg and took gold.
  • Kim Il Gyong got silver with a Snatch of 107 kg.
  • Charron Maude from Canada won bronze by lifting 104 kg.

C&J results:

  • Luo Shifang from China became a gold winner with 139 kg.
  • Kim Il Gyong jerked 136 kg and took silver. She also set the Junior World Record.
  • Charron Maude from Canada secured bronze with a 129 kg lift.

Total results:

  • Luo Shifang from China was a total leader with 247 kg total.
  • Kim Il Gyong became a silver medalist by getting 243 kg overall.
  • Charron Maude from Canada got bronze with 233 kg in total.

07.12 (Day 4)

Overall, the performance at both Men’s divisions was full of tense and at the same time eye-grabbing moments. Category’s leaders were performing at their best trying to prevail the rivals with more weight gaps at each round.

Men’s 67 kg

Snatch results:

  • Rashidov Bunyad from Turkmenistan lifted 141 kg that brought him gold.
  • Dimov Ivan from Bulgaria took silver with 140 kg.
  • Ri Won Ju snatched with 139 kg and won bronze.

C&J results:

  • Ri Won Ju became the leader in this round with 178 kg.
  • Akmolda Sairanikez from Kazakhstan secured silver by jerking 168 kg.
  • Muratbek Uulu Ishimbek from Kyrgyzstan became a bronze medalist with a lift of 164 kg.

Total results:

  • Ri Won Ju became a gold winner with 317 kg total.
  • Dimov Ivan clinched a silver medal with a result of 300 kg.
  • Rashidov Bunyad finished third with  kg in 298 kg total.

Men’s 73 kg

Snatch results:

  • Shi Zhiyong from China made a solid lift of 160 kg.
  • Suharevs Ritvars from Latvia did 156 kg and got silver.
  • Mosquera Luis Javier from Colombia succeeded to lift 150 kg.

C&J results:

  • Wichuma Weeraphon from Thailand became gold medalist with 189 kg.
  • Mayora Pernia Julio Ruben from Venezuela showed the second-best result of 188 kg.
  • Suharevs Ritvars from Latvia took bronze thanks to the 3rd lift 185 kg.

Total results:

  • Suharevs Ritvars became today’s winner by performing 341 kg overall.
  • Shi Zhiyong finished second with 340 kg.
  • Wichuma Weeraphon gained a bronze win with 334 kg in total.

06.12 (Day 3)

Today we had a unique opportunity to watch two categories of Group A – Women’s 55 kg and Men’s 61 kg.

Women’s 55 kg:

Snatch results:

  • Ri Su Yon won gold by lifting 94 kg.
  • Khambao Surodchana from Thailand took silver with  84 kg.
  • Lin Cheng Jing became the bronze medalist in this round with 82 kg.

C&J results:

  • Kang Hyon Gyong got gold with 122 kg.
  • Ri Su Yon secured second spot by lifting 116 kg.
  • Khambao Surodchana from Thailand lifted  109 kg and secured bronze.

Total results:

  • Ri Su Yon became a winner with a total of 210 kg.
  • Khambao Surodchana from Thailand lifted a total 193 kg.
  • Aleksandra Grigoryan from Armenia clinched bronze of  189 kg.

Men’s 61 kg:

Snatch results:

  • Li Fabin from China won gold thanks to his successful third attempt with 137 kg.
  • Indonesian athlete Irawan Eko Yuli became second with 136 kg.
  • Pak Myong Jin became a bronze medalist with 134 kg.

C&J results:

  • Pak Myong Jin performed 171 kg at the third attempt.
  • Mohamad Aniq bin Kasdan secured silver by lifting 170 kg.
  • Morris Hampton Miller closed the Top 3 list with 170 kg lift.

Total results:

  • Pak Myong Jin became a gold medal holder with a total of 305 kg.
  • Ceniza John Febuar took silver with 298 kg.
  • Mohamad Aniq bin Kasdan won bronze due to 296 kg totally.

05.12 (Day 2)

This day, we’re going to spectate tough competition between lifters in two categories from Group A – Women’s 45 kg and 49 kg.

Women’s Cat. 45 kg

Snatch results:

  • Won Hyon Sim was the leader today by getting gold in Snatch of 82 kg.
  • Philippine athlete Ramos Amis Rose Jean took silver in Snatch with 70 kg.

C&J results:

  • Won Hyon Sim took gold in C&J – 99 kg.
  • Ramos Amis Rose Jean from the Philippines won silver in C&J of 85 kg.

Total results:

  • Won Hyon Sim won gold in a total of 181 kg.
  • Ramos Amis Rose Jean became second with a total of 155 kg.

Women’s Cat. 49 kg

Snatch results:

  • Hou Zhihui from China was the leader today by getting gold in Snatch of 96 kg.
  • Another Chinese athlete Jiang Huihua took silver with 96 kg.
  • Ri Song Gum closed the Top 3 by taking bronze in Snatch – 93 kg.

C&J results:

  • Ri Song Gum took gold in C&J – 120 kg.
  • Jiang Huihua from China won silver in C&J of 120 kg.
  • Hou Zhihui from China got bronze in C&J by making 113 kg.

Total results:

  • Jiang Huihua won gold in a total of 216 kg.
  • Ri Song Gum won second place with a total of 213 kg.
  • Hou Zhihui got bronze by making 209 kg in total.

04.12 (Day 1)

On the first day of the Grand Prix II in Doha, men in the category up to 55 kg were competing aiming for the podium. 

Men’s Cat. 55 kg:

Snatch results: 

  • Pang Un Chol got gold in Snatch of 116 kg.
  • Nugroho Satrio Adi from Indonesia won silver by performing Snatch of 115 kg.
  • An Indonesian athlete Rizqih Muhamad Ibnul took bronze medals in Snatch of 113 kg.

Clean & Jerk results:

  • Pang Un Chol got gold in Clean & Jerk as well by lifting 152 kg.
  • Nugroho Satrio Adi from Indonesia took silver with 139 kg.
  • Yodage Dilanka Isuru Kumara from Sri Lanka secured bronze with 133 kg.

Total results:

  • Pang Un Chol got total gold by lifting 268 kg.
  • Nugroho Satrio Adi from Indonesia became second with 254 kg in a total.
  • Yodage Dilanka Isuru Kumara from Sri Lanka clinched bronze by lifting 245 kg.

Men’s Cat. 61 kg:

  • 🥇Pak Myong Jin took the first place by performing 305 kg in total, 134 kg in Snatch, and 171 kg in C&J.
  • 🥈 Ceniza John Febuar from Philippines won silver of 298 kg totally, 133 kg in Snatch, and 165 kg in C&J.
  • 🥉 Mohamad Aniq bin Kasdan from Malaysia gained bronze of a total of 296 kg, 126 kg in Snatch, and 170 kg in C&J.

  • Ri Suk set the Junior World Record in Clean & Jerk by lifting 146 kg.

  • Liang Xiaomei set a new World Record in Clean & Jerk of 161 kg, and a total of 284 kg.
