Thailand’s Weightlifting Prodigy

Surodchana Khambao was born on December 23rd, 1999, and she’s a Thai weightlifter.  She competes in the women’s 49 kg category and she’s known for her impressive strength and determination. She won a gold medal at the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and is one of Thailand’s most celebrated lifters. Her weightlifting journey started when she was a teenager and by 2016, she was already turning heads, winning gold at the Asian Youth Championships in the 53 kg category with a total lift of 176 kg. 

In 2017, Kambao competed at the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, where she finished in fifth place in the women’s 53 kg event. Next year, she won all 3 gold medals in the women’s 53 kg event at the Junior Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. That same year, she got a bronze medal at the Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, with a total lift of 201 kg. 

Khambao hit a career high in 2021 when she won the gold medal at the World Weightlifting in Tashkent. She competed in the women’s 49 kg category and lifted 86 kg in the snatch and 105 kg in the clean and jerk, which came to a total of 191 kg. 

In 2023, she won a bronze medal at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Jinju, South Korea, with a total lift of 200 kg in the 49 kg category. At the 2023 IWF World Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, she finished fourth in the women’s 49 kg event and lifted a total of 196 kg. 

She also competed in the 2023 IWF Grand Prix II and earned a silver medal in the 55 kg category with a total lift of 193 kg. Her ability to excel in different weight categories shows how strong and versatile she is.

Khambao has shown incredible discipline and dedication throughout her career. She started at a young age and consistently trained and improved her performance over the years. Her results speak of her hard work and her achievements have brought pride to Thailand and inspired many young athletes to go after weightlifting.
