The 2023 IWF Grand Prix II in Doha, Qatar, has been a phenomenal event, to say the least. It saw several record-breaking performances, some of which came from Luo Shifang, a Chinese 23-year-old weightlifting rising star. She lifted 247 kg in total, winning three gold medals in the women’s 59 kg category. Besides that, her performance also matched the world record for her weight class.

Ever since starting weightlifting at 10 years of age, Luo has become a force to be reckoned with, consistently delivering dominant performances in the sport. Before her recent achievements, she had already won several gold medals at big-time events like the World Championships, the Asian Championships, and the Asian Junior Championships. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she won a silver medal by finishing just behind Kuo Hsing-Chun from Taiwan.

In Qatar, Shifang’s performance was nothing short of remarkable. She faced tough competition from Kim II Gyong, who previously beat her at the Asian Games recently held in Hangzhou, China. This time around, Shifang made a massive snatch of 108 kg, which was her personal best to date. In the clean and jerk, she successfully lifted 139 kg on her third attempt — beating her previous 136 kg lift in Riyadh.

She hopes to win the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, for which she intends to train hard and improve her technique. Her closest competitor Kim II Gyong, is not eligible to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics, making Luo Shifang the favourite for securing the gold at the highest level. However, she will face tough competition from rivals like Kuo Hsing-Chun, and Maude Charron among many others.
