Men’s 89 Kg Division Recap – IWF European Weightlifting Championships 2024

Apparently, everyone was waiting for the sixth day of the European Championships as the greatest powerhouses of the 89-kg weight division were going to compete, pushing their limits to surpass their personal bests.

The battle was very emotional and thrilling, full of immaculate lifts.

Karlos Nasar Fires Up the Race Setting Another Junior World Record

12 top-notch weightlifters of the 89-kg weight category were performing this evening, with the most powerful ones firing up the podium. We witnessed the everlasting battle between Karlos Nasar and Antonino Pizzolato that resulted in Bulgarian’s victory.

These are exemplary athletes in the division who have already gained popularity and built their reputation in the weightlifting community:

Karlos Nasar, a Bulgarian weightlifter and one of the youngest weightlifting world record holders ever. 

Antonino Pizzolato, an Italian weightlifter, bronze medalist of Olympic Games in Tokyo and three-time European Champion. 

Marin Robu, a Moldovan weightlifter who got a bronze medal at the World Championships in Tashkent. He’s also a silver and bronze medalist at the 2021 and 2023 European Championships.

An American athlete Damron Nathan also was performing today as a guest.

The performance in the Snatch exercise started from 152 kg.

8: MUELLER Nico – 158 kg
7: FRIEDRICH Raphael – 158 kg
6: MEZINSKIS Armands – 163 kg
5: ASAYONAK Petr – 167 kg
4: KARAPETYAN Andranik – 170 kg

On this contest day, 57 % of all attempts were successful.

Top 3 Leaders’ Results

Now let’s analyze the Top 3 lifters’ performance:

🥉PIZZOLATO Antonino – 170 kg
🥈ROBU Marin – 171 kg
🥇NASAR Karlos May – 176 kg

The third place moved to Antonino Pizzolato from Italy who lifted 170 kg on the first attempt. However, the second and third tries of 175 kg resulted in no lifts.

The silver medalist in the category was Marin Robu from Moldova. He did 165 kg on the first try, failed to lift 171 kg on the second attempt, and then repeated the same weight of 171 kg successfully.

The winner of the weight division became Karlos Nasar from Bulgaria. He performed 168 kg on the first attempt successfully, then did 173 kg well on the second try, and finished with a winning  176 kg on the last attempt. What’s more, he succeeded in shattering a new Junior World record in the exercise.

The US team was represented by a lifter DAMRON Nathan who failed all his three lifts: the first attempt of 160, the second and the third tries of 166 kg

Clean & Jerk

The contest in the Clean & Jerk discipline started with a weight of 178 kg.

60 % of all attempts in this exercise were successful.

Top 3 Leaders’ Results

Let’s describe the performance of the Top 3 lifters:

🥉ASAYONAK Petr – 207 kg
🥈PIZZOLATO Antonino – 210 kg
🥇NASAR Karlos May – 215 kg

The third place moved to Petr Asayonak who didn’t manage to lift 200 kg on the first attempt, but lifted the same weight successfully on the second try. The last try of 207 kg resulted in a bronze medal for him.

The silver medalist in the category was Antonino Pizzolato. He did 210 kg on the first try successfully, but the next two attempts of 215 kg and 222 kg resulted in red lights.

The winner of this weight division became Karlos Nasar. He started from 208 kg on the first attempt which he did successfully, then he lifted 215 kg on the second try. But, after Pizzolato failed to lift 222 kg on the third attempt, Nasar refused to use his last attempt.

The American DAMRON Nathan withdrew from performing in the Clean & Jerk exercise.

Marin Robu from Moldova took the bronze medal by lifting 378 kg overall which is 2 kilos less than his contender at the second place.

The silver medalist was Italian Nino Pizzolato with 380 kg in the sum of two exercises. 

The winner of the category was a lifter from Bulgaria, Karlos Nasar: he succeeded in lifting 391 kg in total which is 11 kilos more than his opponent from the second spot. He also set a new record in total.
