IWF European Weightlifting Championships 2024 – Women’s 45 kg Division Recap

The first day of the European Weightlifting Championships in Sofia showed us exciting lifting in the Women’s 45-kg weight category, where nine female athletes were performing in the first session of the European Champs.

This day became a day of triumph for the Turkish team as its two representatives won gold and silver medals.

Turkish Lifters Prevail the Battle Setting Two New Junior Records

Let’s meet the TOP 3 lifters who claimed the spotlight with exemplary lifts and amazing performances: 

  • 🥇Bektas Cansu (TUR) – 75-88-163
  • 🥈Altun Gamze (TUR) – 65-92-157 
  • 🥉Garcia Rincon Marta (ESP) – 72-84-156 

The winner in the category was Bektas Cansu from Turkey who gained did Snatch at 75 kg, Clean & Jerk at 88 kg, and 163 kg in total. Her total result became the new European U23 record.

The second place was occupied by her compatriot Altun Gamze who did 157 kg in total, 65 kg in Snatch, and 92 kg in Clean & Jerk. 

The bronze medalist was Garcia Rincon Marta from Spain who snatched 72 kg, 84 kg in Clean & Jerk, and got a total of 156 kg.

Top Athletes’ Review

The 45-kg weight class winner Cansu Bektas, is a Turkish weightlifter who is a two-time European champion and a European Youth, Juniors, and U23 record holder. Her prior best result was 72-90-162 she performed at the European Championships in Yerevan.

Speaking about the silver medalist Gamze Altun is a Turkish weightlifter who took the silver medal at the 2023 European Championships in Yerevan. Today she lifted 92 kg in Clean & Jerk which was the new European U23 record.

The bronze holder became Garcia Rincon Marta, the lifter from Spain. She took bronze at the European Championships in Yerevan with a total result of 163 kg.

Considering the Snatch performance, we can claim that overall the performance was good, just with several no-lifts on the third attempts, while one athlete bombed out.

  • 🥇Bektas Cansu (TUR) – 75 kg
  • 🥈Garcia Rincon Marta (ESP) – 72 kg
  • 🥉Nguen Nadezhda Mey (BUL) – 69 kg

The situation in the Clean & Jerk session was the following: half of the lifters had two ‘no-lift’ attempts, with the first successful try. Here’s the list of Top 3 lifters who got medals in the exercise:

Clean & Jerk results:

  • 🥇 Altun Gamze (TUR) – 92 kg
  • 🥈Bektas Cansu (TUR) – 88 kg
  • 🥉Miron Ioana Madalina (ROU) – 85 kg
