1. Sunny Health & Fitness SF-E3912SMART Elliptical – Top Pick

Sunny Health & Fitness SF-E3912SMART Elliptical

Sunny Health & Fitness makes some of the best home workout equipment, and their products are often on my top lists. Their elliptical machines pack a lot of functionality for prices usually around or slightly below market average, which is a huge plus when comparing them to other manufacturers.

The E3912 Smart model standing elliptical offers excellent low-impact exercises with unique workout modes, easy stat tracking, and Bluetooth smart device connectivity.

  • Type/Model: Rear drive, standing elliptical
  • Item weight: 104.8 Pounds
  • Weight Limit: 330 pounds
  • Product Dimensions: 20.47″D x 57.09″W x 63.8″H
  • Display: Digital monitor
  • Workout programs: 24 workout modes, including manual and pre-programmed settings
  • Additional features: Steel construction, heart rate monitor, textured footplates, Bluetooth connectivity, odometer, internal flywheel with 16 magnetic resistance levels, transportation wheels, smart device holder, SunnyFit fitness app

There are 24 unique workout modes that you can set manually or, if it’s too much of a hassle for you, select one of the pre-programmed ones. As you work out, you can rest your arms on the fixed handles or grab onto the moving handles to train your upper body as well.

The back-lit blue and white digital performance monitor is easy on the eyes and has a simple statistics layout, making it ideal even if you have problems with eyesight. It tracks your time, speed, distance traveled, calories burned, and heart rate, and you can even enter your age to help it better set your workout.

On top of the display is a smart device holder where you can place your phone or tablet if you want to use it for entertainment or additional workout assistance.

The elliptical features Bluetooth connectivity, so If you’re a tech-savvy senior or have someone to help you set it up, you can make a lot of use of the SunnyFit smart device app. The app can measure your performance in real-time, save your progress, compare your results at leaderboards, and even has over 100 workout videos to help you achieve your fitness goals.

If you’re not interested in using a smart device with it, you can even get the same elliptical model without Bluetooth features for around ¼ of the price. All of this makes the E3912 model the best elliptical machine for seniors based on my experience.

2. Body Power BST800 2-in-1 Elliptical Machine & Stair Stepper - Runner Up

Body Power BST800 2-in-1 Elliptical Machine & Stair Stepper

My runner-up recommended elliptical trainer for seniors combines the effects of two exercise machines into one. The StepTrac motion combines the oval path of the elliptical machine with stepper movement for a two-in-one exercise.

You can also use the synchronized handlebars for upper-body and arm engagement, giving you a low-impact near total-body workout.

  • Type/Model: Front drive, combined elliptical and stepper

Compared to other full-sized elliptical machines, this one has a fairly small footprint and will fit easily into a home or garage gym. It’s fairly easy to move around using the transportation wheels.

The LCD is easy to see and use and displays basic information such as time, speed, distance, and calories burned. The unique feature of this elliptical and what makes it good for seniors especially is the curve-crank technology. The design always keeps the crank at a 90-degree angle, removing dead zones common on standard pedal-based machines.

A dead zone is a moment you feel when pushing pedals that require extra effort, that becomes harder to push through as you get tired. The Body Power BST800 does not have that moment and has a fully smooth motion throughout the workout.

This makes it a great elliptical over 60 years old or older, as it has a low and flat impact on the joints and hips. The machine is easily mountable by simply stepping on it from the back, which senior citizens with low mobility will appreciate.

What Are the Benefits of Using Ellipticals for Seniors?

✅ Ellipticals Are Substitutes for Walking, the Most Important Daily Exercise

Walking is without a doubt the most important daily physical activity for senior citizens. Regular walking can prevent or reduce cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, improve your sleep and mental health, and is an excellent low-impact weight loss method. Ellipticals allow you to simulate walking from the comfort of your home.

✅ Ellipticals Provide Low-Impact Exercises

It’s not uncommon for senior citizens to have issues with their joints, hips, back, and similar. Ellipticals provide a low-impact near full-body exercise, assuming you’re using the arm handles to engage your upper body - perfect for those with chronic pain.

✅ Ellipticals Are Easy to Use

Elliptical machines do not require extensive workout knowledge to use. All you have to do is stand on them and start walking, and you’re working out. This makes them very beginner-friendly and ideal for senior citizens.

✅ Ellipticals Are Great if You Don’t Get To Move a Lot

Depending on their life circumstances, it can be difficult and exhausting for senior citizens to leave the house. If you’re a senior citizen who doesn’t get out much for one reason or another, using ellipticals is a good alternative.

✅ Ellipticals Can Fix Posture and Improve Balance

Regularly going for walks or runs with your elliptical machine will help straighten your back, fix your posture, and improve your balance. A study published in the Human Kinetics Journal concluded that people over 60 years old who are physically active have a lower chance of falling than those who were less physically active.

If you’re a senior citizen, this can have a massive impact on your quality of life. Reports show that in the U.S. alone, 36 million people aged 65 or higher suffer injuries from falling each year.

Benefits of Using Ellipticals for Seniors

What to Look For in Ellipticals for Seniors?

1. Adjustability

Adjustability settings such as incline level and exercise programs increase your workout possibilities. The products rated the highest in adjustability usually have the most settings, but also are easier to set up for a senior person.

2. Monitor Functionality

The more options the monitor has and the easier it is to read, the higher the grade will be. For senior citizens, the monitor must be easy to see and intuitive.

3. Portability

Generally, the easier it is to move the machine, the higher the portability grade will be. Compact and carryable devices will always win out in this category, but all of these ellipticals have some form of mobility, such as transportation wheels.

4. Multifunctionality

Ellipticals are fairly simple cardio machines with one main exercise method. Having said that, some have additional multifunctionality by combining more machines into one.

5. Price/Quality

Price VS quality is judged relative to other products in the price range. The premium choice on my lists is usually the highest quality, but other choices can have a high grade too if they outperform expectations relative to their price.

Every choice on the list is a product I would recommend, and there are options for various budgets, so you can choose what’s best for your money.

How to Use Ellipticals for Seniors Right?

1. Consult Your Doctor

Before you start working out, it’s always a good idea to do a checkup with your doctor. It’s important to be in good physical health before exercising for all ages, but especially for senior citizens.

2. Exercise Regularly

This is a general tip for all people, but for senior citizens especially. Regular exercise for the elderly has been proven to reduce age-related cognitive decline and slow down diseases such as Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.

3. Use Your Arms for Balance

Loss of balance during physical exercise is a common problem among elderly and can result in injuries. Luckily, most ellipticals tend to have multiple arm rests (movable or fixated) which you can hold on to for balance. Otherwise, use the machine while seated down for added stability.

Tips From the Champ

Generally, the easier it is to move the machine, the higher the portability grade will be. Compact and carryable devices will always win out in this category, but all of these ellipticals have some form of mobility, such as transportation wheels.

4. Pay Attention to Your Posture

Poor posture increases the risk of injury in athletes of all ages, not just the elderly. When using an elliptical, make sure you stand up straight, straighten your back, and keep your shoulders back. If you’re having trouble maintaining posture, use the handlebars, reduce the resistance, lower the incline level, or take a break if necessary.

5. If You Feel Discomfort or Pain, Stop Exercising

Remember to listen to your body. If you experience any pain or discomfort, you can try lowering exercise intensity by adjusting the machine. If you’re still having issues, stop exercising and consult your doctor.
