News Europe 2024 Olympic Weightlifting

Valentin Ionadi Iancu  won Silver in the Clean and Jerk in the Men’s 61 kg Category at the 2024 IWF European Championships

The second day of the European Championships started off with the men’s 61 kg category, and it was a terrific battle for the top spot, with many athletes having the chance to snag a medal.

For Team Romania, the success at this year’s Europeans continues, and after the big day for Mihaela Valentina, it was Valentin Iancu’s time to shine.

The Romanian lifter didn’t start the competition well, lifting only 115 kg for the Snatch and finishing in 8th place for the movement.

Thankfully, he managed to gather himself and delivered a great lift for the Clean & Jerk getting 154 kg, which awarded him the silver medal for the movement. Unfortunately, his total of 269 kg wasn’t enough for a spot in the podium, and he managed to finish just inside the top 5.

Last year was Valentin’s first competition in the 61 kg category, and he finished in the far away 33rd place at the 2023 World Championships in Riyadh. Prior to that, Iancu had his biggest success in the 55 kg category and finished 3rd at last year’s European Championships in Armenia.
