The start of the Asian Championship this year has been just what we expected and more. With more than 230 athletes from 34 countries competing, it promises to deliver one of the best competitions this year, prior to the Olympic Games, especially considering China’s absence and the chance for many underdogs to take the podium.

One of the first great results of the Asian Championship came from Rosegie A. Ramos, who performed incredibly well in the 49 kg division and managed to win a bronze medal with a silver one for the snatch event as well.

On the snatch event, Ramos showed confidence and lifted 88 kg on her third attempt – enough to give her the second spot for the movement. Things weren’t as smooth during the clean & jerk, where she managed to lift 102 kg, which left her in sixth place for that event. Regardless of the slightly worse performance during the C&J, Ramos got a total of 190 kg  – enough to give her a spot on the podium as she finished in third place.

Prior to this year, Rosegie Ramos has made a name for herself as one of the best Filipino female weightlifters. However, after her fantastic career as a junior (becoming the Asian Junior Champion twice), she has struggled to have the same impact as an adult. Last year, she finished 7th in the World Championship in Riyad and 9th in the Asian Championship, so this third place is more than just a standard improvement – it’s a true underdog story.
