Day 1 at IWF Worlds 2024: Zhao Jinhong Sets 2 World Records in W45 & Chomchuen Natthawat Shines in M55

The 2024 World Weightlifting Championships in Manama, Bahrain, opened with an electrifying session in the Women’s 45kg category.
Women’s 45kg category: China sets the tone
China’s Zhao Jinhong set the tone for the competition, delivering a flawless performance to clinch gold in snatch, clean & jerk, total and set 2 World Records in C&J.
Women’s 45kg category: Snatch Session Review
In the snatch session it was a fierce battle between Zhao Jinhong and Won Hyon Sim. Zhao’s final lift of 87 kg edged out Won, who narrowly missed taking the lead with her successful 86 kg attempt. Marta Garcia from team Spain secured bronze with a 75 kg lift, showing resilience at the World`s platform.

Zhao Jinhong (CHN) setting 2 World Records in a row 110 and 113 kg!
Zhao solidified her dominance in the clean & jerk, setting 2 World Records in a row 110 and 113 kg, further asserting her superiority. Won Hyon Sim end up with 105 kg for the silver. The bronze went to Vietnam’s Pham Dinh Thi, who pushed through with 97 kg, overcoming stiff competition from other lifters in the final attempts.

The second competition of the opening day of the World Championships delivered thrilling action in the Men’s 55kg.
Men’s 55kg category: Snatch Session Review
The snatch session was an intense duel between Brazilian Thiago Felix Da Silva and Yang Yang from China. The Brazilian lifter surprisingly clinched gold with 3 powerful lifts of 114-118-121 kg, narrowly edging out Yang and Chomchuen, who both posted 120 kg.
Chomchuen was awarded because he snatched the same weight after the Chinese lifter, setting the stage for a dramatic clean & jerk session.

- 🥇Thiago Felix Da Silva (BRA) – 121 kg
- 🥈Yang Yang (CHN) – 120 kg
- 🥉Chomchuen Natthawat (THA) – 120 kg

Pang Un Chol made 154 kg in the clean & jerk and claimed gold. Chomchuen kept the pressure on with a 153 kg lift to secure silver, while Felix Da Silva added a respectable 148 kg, earning bronze.

Men’s 55kg category: Total Recap
With a total of 273 kg, Chomchuen Natthawat secured the gold medal for Thailand, demonstrating remarkable consistency across both lifts. Thiago Felix Da Silva settled for silver with a 269 kg total, he made 6 of 6 lift and this is a historical success for Brazil.
The bronze in total (263 kg) went to Fernando Agad from the Philippines. He was 6th in snatch and 4th in C&J, but his total luckily earned him his first podium at the world championships.
