IWF Asian Weightlifting Championship 2024 Day 1 Recap โ€“ Male 55 Kg

Day 1 of the AWF Asian Weightlifting Championship 2024 is expected to have a great group of athletes who will fight for the top spots for their teams.

PANG UN CHOL, This is his third international competition but his first competition out of DPRK. TANG CHUN-YEN from Taiwan, NATTHAWAT CHOMCHUEN from Thailand who got second place at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics.

Snatch

The performance in the Snatch exercise started from 86 kg.

  • 5: WITOON MINGMOON who got a null result after failing all his three lifts.
  • 4: TANG,CHUN-YEN got fourth place with a 90kg snatch.

Now letโ€™s analyze the Top 3 liftersโ€™ performance:

  • ๐Ÿฅ‡NATTHAWAT CHOMCHUEN from Thailand
  • ๐ŸฅˆPANG UN CHOL from North Korea
  • ๐Ÿฅ‰LAI GIA THANH from Vietnam

LAI GIA THANH from Vietnam won the bronze medal, who fought all the way through with a 116 kg after failing his first two attempts.

The second place went to PANG UN CHOL who started with a snatch of 112kg in his first attempt, failed his second, and went up to snatch 116kg for his third lift.

The gold medal went to NATTHAWAT CHOMCHUEN from Thailand, who started with a snatch of 115kg, went to snatch 117kg for his second and finished his snatch session with a lift of 119 kg.

Summarizing the Snatch session, we can say that better performance were expected for the opening of this competition, close to 50% of the snatches were failed, one of the biggest surprises was WITOON MINGMOON who didnโ€™t manage to successfully lift any of his attempts, and NATTHAWAT CHOMCHUEN who went three for three in his successful attempts.

Clean & Jerk

The contest in the Clean & Jerk movement started with a weight of 110 kg from TAN, CHUN-YEN.

  • 5: TANG,CHUN-YEN got the fifth place with a 115 kg Clean and Jerk
  • 4: LAI GIA THANH got fourth after failing his last attempt, and only managed to score a 134 kg Clean and Jerk.

Top 3 Leadersโ€™ Results

Letโ€™s describe the performance of the Top 3 lifters:

  • ๐Ÿฅ‡PANG UN CHOL from North Korea
  • ๐ŸฅˆNATTHAWAT CHOMCHUEN
  • ๐Ÿฅ‰WITOON MINGMOON

WITOON MINGMOON secured third place with his first lift, that scored 135 kg Clean and Jerk, after that, he attempted a 150kg lift that resulted in a no lift, and his last attempt he tried 151 kg Clean and Jerk but that one also resulted in a no lift.

The silver medalist NATTHAWAT CHOMCHUEN, who started with a solid 145 kg Clean and jerk, and went to try 149 kg for his second and third attempt but resulted in both no lifts.

PANG UN CHOL from North Korea became a gold winner with a 150 kg Clean and Jerk on his second attempt, he then went to try 153kg but resulted in a no lift.

The gold medalist in the category was PANG UN CHOL with a total of 266kg and a solid performance with only two failed lifts.

The silver holder was NATTHAWAT CHOMCHUEN with a total of 264kg who started on a high with three for three good lifts in snatch and managed to hang on the spot with his first attempt in clean and jerk.LAI GIA THANH took bronze just by a thread with only two good lifts, only one in either lift with a total of 250kg.

Final Thoughts

The opening of the 55 kg male category was a little rocky, with almost 50% of no lifts the athletes managed to get some good heavy lifts. PANG UN CHOL from North Korea managed to secure his gold medal by clean and jerking an impressive 150 kg lift.
