What Type of Dumbbells to Pick?

1. Rubber Hex Dumbbells

A big benefit of choosing a rubber hex Rogue dumbbell set is that they don't roll about on the gym floor. This makes them more user-friendly and safer to store or leave around the house near young children or animals.

The flat edges on the dumbbell heads also make it easier to perform certain exercises such as dumbbell press-ups and renegade rows. Both exercises require you to place your hands on the dumbbell handles and need a firm base of support.

The rubber casing on the dumbbell heads makes rubber hex dumbbells very durable. The casing helps to protect the dumbbells from direct sunlight, rust, and repeated heavy use.

The rubber dumbbells may have a slight odor to them when first opened which might make them unsuitable for people who are sensitive to smells.

The heavier larger hexagon dumbbell heads may become quite uncomfortable on your legs and take up a lot of room if you don't have an efficient storage space in your home gym.

Who Should Use Rubber Hex Dumbbells?

Whilst rubber Hex Dumbbells made a good addition to any lifters home gym setup, they may be more suited to:

  • Lifters who have a large gym space or suitable storage rack (only if you need multiple pairs)
  • Lifters who want to use their dumbbells more aggressively and need the added protection
  • Lifters who have small children or pets might find them safer to use

2. Urethane Dumbbells

The main selling point of choosing a Urethane Rogue dumbbell set over other types is its durability. As urethane is harder and more resistant than normal rubber, it can better withstand the elements and be stored outside without wearing down.

The urethane also has a more neutral odor compared to rubber and can be dropped during use without the worry of the material breaking.

urethane dumbbells

Urethane dumbbells are typically sold in heavier weights than other dumbbell types, making them more suitable for higher-level lifters.

Urethane dumbbells do have a round head meaning they can’t be stored flat without rolling around. This may make them unsuitable in a smaller home gym environment or for those with small animals or children who need to store the dumbbells safely and securely.

Urethane dumbbells are also more expensive compared to other dumbbell types making them very costly at larger weight increments.

Who Should Use Urethane Dumbbells?

Urethane dumbbells are suitable for a wide range of beginner to elite level lifters with a range of goals. However, they may be more suitable for certain populations such as:

  • Lifters looking for heavier weight options
  • Lifters who want to store their weights outdoors
  • Lifters who don't mind spending the extra money
  • When being used frequently in a commercial setting

Tips From the Champ

Rubber Hex Dumbbells are ideal for stability, safe storage, and durability against sunlight and rust. If you prioritize durability, especially for outdoor use, even with added cost, Urethane Dumbbells are a suitable choice. For versatility and adjustable weights in a space-saving option, consider Loadable Dumbbells, but be mindful of the need for separate plates and potential susceptibility to environmental factors.

3. Loadable Dumbbells

Loadable dumbbells are an excellent choice if you're looking for high-quality dumbbells that are easily adjustable.

Loadable dumbbells are extremely versatile, with the 2-inch diameter handles compatible with both normal and Olympic weight plates.

The design of loadable dumbbells makes them a great space-saving alternative which cost less and caters to a similar weight range as fixed dumbbell types.

The adjustable nature of the dumbbells means you can change the weight amount in any increment you need based on your current strength level.

A downside of loadable dumbbells is that you do need to buy the plates separately which may be an issue if you don't already have them in your home gym.

Loadable dumbbells may also be less resistant to the environment and getting dropped as they have no protective casing on them. Dropping them may make the collars looser or crack the weight plates.

Who Should Use Loadable Dumbbells?

Loadable dumbbells are an excellent quality, well-designed type of dumbbell. They may be more suitable for certain types of lifters such as:

  • Lifters with smaller home gyms spaces
  • Lifters who only need a lower range of weight options
  • Lifters who have a smaller initial budget to spend

FAQ

Are Rogue Dumbbells Worth It?

Whilst Rogue dumbbells may cost more compared to other brands, the price increase is reflected in the build quality.

Rogue is a proven world-leading brand, with its equipment heavily tested in various competitions.

Are Rogue Dumbbells Made in the USA?

All Rogue’s products are 100% manufactured in the USA. This includes the coal they use in manufacturing to the metals needed.

When checking a Rogue product, look for the ‘Made in the USA’ logo and ‘Made in the USA’ references to determine if the item is American-made.

Yes, it is. All Rogue equipment is rigorously tested during the manufacturing process to make sure it’s fit for use in the home gym and a commercial setting.

As rouge is the leading supplier of many sporting events including the Olympics, it has to be certified as fit for use in both settings before being sold.

Do Rogue Dumbbells Smell?

Depending on the materials used, some Rogue dumbbells may have a slight odor when first opened. If the dumbbells are left out to air when first opened, you can expect the smell to go within weeks.

If you want to use them in your home gym, consider placing a bag of cat litter or baking soda in the room to help get rid of the smell.

Conclusion

Rogue has produced and sold high-quality dumbbell types that have been proven to last in different sporting events.

Both the rubber hex dumbbells and urethane dumbbells are durable types of fixed dumbbells that are suitable for a range of lifters.

The Rogue loadable dumbbells are a well-designed adjustable dumbbell type that offers a space-saving, cheaper alternative option.

Which dumbbell is best depends on your needs. If you're looking for a high-quality dumbbell for use in an indoor setting where small children and animals may be present, the rubber hex dumbbells may be the best choice.

If you want to store your dumbbells outside or need a larger weight option, the urethane-coated dumbbells may be the better choice.

If you're looking for a well-designed loadable dumbbell for use in a smaller gym space and you only need them at smaller weight increments, the Rogue adjustable dumbbells may be best for you.

In any case, all 3 dumbbell types make a great option for any home gym catering to a wide range of lifter abilities and needs.
