Shi Zhiyong won Silver in the Men’s 73 kg Category At the 2024 IWF Weightlifting World Cup

With the Paris Olympics drawing near, athletes are eagerly vying for their final shot at qualifying at the IWF World Cup in Thailand.

After a few days, we’re moving away from the lightweight categories and today, spectators were gripped by an electrifying showdown among competitors in the men’s 73 kg category.

For Shi Zhiyong of China, the competition started successfully as he managed to lift 165 kg on the Snatch on his final attempt, a weight enough to give him the gold medal for the event.

Then, on the Clean & Jerk, he couldn’t perform as well, lifting only 191 kg and finishing in fifth place. However, his total of 356 kg was enough to get him the silver medal for the category, even though he was 9 kg below the first-placed Rizki Juniansyah.

Shi Zhiyong is one of the most decorated weightlifters currently competing with 2 gold Olympic medals to his name, along with 3 World titles and 4 Asian Championships.

Still, at the Olympic Games in Paris, he will be amongst the top contenders for a podium spot, given his current form.
