2024 Olympic Games, Day 2 Recap – Men’s 73 kg: Juniansyah Rizki Wins Gold and Sets New Olympic Record in C&J

The Olympic Games are moving closer to its equator. Day 2 is going to be captivating as another two weight divisions are on the schedule today. Emotional performances in today’s Women’s 59 kg and Men’s 73 kg categories were accompanied by epic lifts, where athletes were pushing their limits to achieve their dreams.

Men’s 73-kg division brought us a worthy show from twelve weightlifters who were ready for the battle for Olympic medals and felt unmatched emotions during their performances on the Paris lifting platform.

Athletes’ presentation

Today twelve ambitious weightlifters were standing on the podium in Paris hoping to make their country outshine at the Olympic Games. Nevertheless, we can distinguish four of the division’s most outstanding and major opponents.

SHI Zhiyong from China, a two-time Olympic Champion (2016 at 69 kg and 2020 at 73 kg), three-time World, and four-time Asian Champion (2012, 2016, 2019, and 2020. He’s a current World Record holder in Snatch and Total – in Tokyo 2020, he set Olympic records in the Snatch and Clean & Jerk and a world record total (166-198-364).

JUNIANSYAH Rizki, from Indonesia, a promising silver medalist at the Worlds in Bogota and the 2024 Asian Championships in Tashkent. He’s a three-time gold medalist at the Islamic Solidarity Games and two-time champion at the junior world champs. Being a first-time Olympian, he’s ranked first in the Olympic rating list.

SUHAREVS Ritvars from Latvia, a four-time gold medalist of the European Youth Championships, and a European Champion in his current weight category. He placed sixth in men’s light-heavyweight on the Olympic Games debut in Tokyo 2020.

WICHUMA Weeraphon, from Thailand, won gold at the 2023 Worlds in Riyadh. He’s also a medalist in 2022. He’s a first-time Olympian.

This heart-breaking race for the gold was full of breath-taking moments everyone expected, while the contenders impressed the spectators with incredible weights on the scoreboard.

Snatch

The performance in the Snatch exercise started from 138 kg. The atmosphere was tense as one of the most competitive categories was performing this evening. The majority of weightlifters were performing evenly trying not to become defeated by their rivals. While the obvious leader was Shi Zhiyong who ordered great weights from the very start.

Unfortunately, the Latvian athlete Ritvars Suharevs bombed out today after his second attempt to lift 147 kg.

So, here are the names of weightlifters who managed to get to the Top 6:

4: Bozhidar Andreev (BUL) – 154 kg
5: Mayora Pernia Julio (VEN) – 152 kg
6: Miyamoto Masanori (JPN) – 151 kg

Top 3 leaders’ results

Now let’s analyze the Top 3 lifters’ performance:

1: Shi Zhiyong (CHN)  – 165 kg
2: Juniansyah Rizki (INA) – 155 kg
3: Luis Mosquera (COL) – 155 kg

Luis Mosquera from Colombia ended this session with the following lifts: 150  kg on the first lift he failed at once, the second – the same 150 kg, which resulted in a good lift, and the last of 155 kg brought the green light.

The second place went to Juniansyah Rizki from Indonesia. He made the first attempt at 155 kg which failed. He made a 155 kg attempt on the second try with success and wanted to finish with 162 kg, however the last lift resulted with no success.

The first place went to Shi Zhiyong from China who snatched 161 kg at the first attempt, 165 kg at the second, and ordered 168 kg, but didn’t cope with such a weight. He jumped over his rival for 10 kilos which gave him a convincing victory.

Snatch results:

Summarizing the Snatch session, we can say that everyone was expecting a Chinese athlete’s supremacy in the Snatch round since Shi is famous for his explosive quick movements. His excellent mastery gave him great dominance over his opponents.

Ritvars Suharevs from Latvia, unfortunately, withdrew from the competition trying to lift 147 kg on the first and second attempts. But, he even refused to do the last lift because of the shoulder injury. What about the rest of the participants, only two made 3/3 attempts, while others had two red lights.

Clean & Jerk

The contest in the Clean & Jerk started with a weight of 175 kg. This insane session brought us the following Top 6 lifters who have already come into Olympic history:

4: Andreev Bozhidar D. (BUL) – 190 kg
5: Miyamoto Masanori (JPN) – 187 kg
6: Bak Joohyo (KOR) – 187 kg

Top 3 leaders’ results

Let’s describe the performance of the Top 3 lifters:

1: Juniansyah Rizki (INA)  – 199 kg
2: Wichuma Weeraphon (THA) – 198 kg
3: Ozbek Muhammed (TUR) – 191 kg

Ozbek Muhammed from Turkey secured third place due to his final attempt: he failed his first lift of 189 kg; the same situation happened to the second attempt to cope with 191 kg. Finally, he performed well in the last attempt of 191 kg.

The silver medalist in this battle became Wichuma Weeraphon from Thailand. Today he started his performance with 190 kg, then 194 kg he did with success, and finalized with an attempt of 198 kg which brought him the second spot.

Juniansyah Rizki from Indonesia became the winner in the 73-kg weight division. He started from 191 kg, then lifted 199 kg on the second attempt. He refused to perform the last lift, thus he set a new Olympic record in the C&J exercise.

Clean & Jerk results:

This round was also full of tense moments as more than half of the weightlifters showed poor results. Ritvars Suharevs withdrew from the competition as he got injured in the Snatch event. 

A real shock was Shi Zhiyong’s performance who bombed out in this round as he failed to lift 191 kg.

Meanwhile we got two lifters who set new records today: Juniansyah Rizki from Indonesia shattered a new Olympic record with 199 kg; and Wichuma Weeraphon set a Junior world record by lifting 198 kg.

🥉 Andreev Bozhidar D. (BUL) – 344 kg
4 Ozbek Muhammed (TUR) – 341 kg

6 Miyamoto Masanori (JPN) – 338 kg

The gold medalist in the category was Indonesian Juniansyah Rizki who did 354 kg overall.

The silver medalist was Wichuma Weeraphon from Thailand who finished with 346 kg, being defeated by the winner for 8 kilos.

Andreev Bozhidar from Bulgaria took bronze thanks to his total of 344 kg.

Final thoughts

Today’s performance in the Men’s 73 kg division showed us an unexpected show: the supposed leaders failed their chances to take the winning spots because of psychological pressure, being in a hurry, or getting injured during the performance. Thus, we got a little bit of another Top 3.

What about new records? Indonesian Rizki Juniansyah set a new Olympic record in the C&J round and his opponent from Thailand Wichuma Weeraphon set a Junior World Record in this round as well.
