Home Gym Ideas on a Budget

Why would you even consider a home gym in the first place? Well, there are multiple reasons, really. Just imagine what it entails when you're going to a gym.

On average, people usually go to the gym 2-3 times per week. You'll pay a monthly membership and share the gym with others. Since you don't really go there to talk, not if you're serious about getting your planned workout done anyway. You also have to travel to the gym and then go home. That costs both money and, more importantly, time.

While investing in a home gym might seem expensive, consider all these drawbacks that a regular gym has and put them on paper to see how at which point you'd break even. Plus, with a home gym, you save plenty of time - a premium resource that is limited for all of us.

Generally, getting a home gym is a great idea, but it is also a long-term investment. More people in your household can use it, and they can use it on demand and on a whim. How do you buy all that expensive gear to fill up your basic home gym setup? Where do I start?

That's where I come in. I'll guide you on everything essential in your home gym to cover your bases and workout routines.

You will decide what is important to you and the gear you'd need to make those routines a reality. I'll also talk about which parts are mandatory for any gym at home and which pieces of equipment can be bought once you have some bases covered.

Best Essential Gear Home Gym Equipment

If you’re building a new home gym, it is imperative to cover the essentials. These are pieces of gear that allow you to cover most of your muscle groups through a wide variety of exercises. I’m, of course, talking about a bench, a barbell, some weight plates to go with the barbell, some dumbbells, and, if you really want to cover all your bases – then a squat rack.

Adjustable Bench

A bench is undoubtedly one of the most essential pieces of affordable home gym equipment for a home gym, offering immense versatility and functionality. Incorporating a bench into your workout space allows you to perform a vast array of exercises that target different muscle groups, such as bench presses, seated shoulder presses, tricep dips, and dumbbell rows, to name a few.

Additionally, a bench can be adjusted to various angles, enabling you to work on your muscles from multiple positions and achieve well-rounded strength. Due to its multi-purpose nature, a bench is almost mandatory in a home gym setup, maximizing your workout potential while saving space and minimizing the need for multiple specialized pieces of equipment.

Ab-3100 Adjustable Weight Bench

Investing in a quality bench will significantly enhance your exercise routine and help you achieve your fitness goals more efficiently.

My recommendation for an adjustable bench is Ab-3100 Adjustable Weight Bench. If you’re just starting out with your home gym setup, I’d highly recommend investing in this piece of equipment. This bench has a super comfortable cushion with good stitches that will last a long time instead of wearing down and pulling out. It also has a heavy-duty steel frame that can be chosen in 4 different color options: metallic black, red, blue, and matte black.

Ab-3100 Bench instagram

You can still utilize a bench for core exercises, even without dumbbells or barbells. And the 700 lbs weight capacity will keep you safely supported even if you’re big and use heavy weights. If you’re a tall person, keep in mind that the bench, while flat, is 50.5 inches long. And if it’s in its seated position, you still get a comfy 13’’x10.5’’ seat, with 34.75’’ of backrest. And if anything goes wrong, you are backed by a 1-year warranty.

Squat Rack

A squat rack is another indispensable piece of equipment for any home gym, offering immense value and versatility. They have a few significant downsides that you need to consider before going this route. They are big. You'll need to make sure that you have the required space. So if you're building a budget garage gym, this might be the last essential you'd go for. You should either use a squat rack first or last while building your essential setup. If you go the bench + barbell/ dumbbells route, I will invest in the rack after I sort those.

Squat racks are designed to provide support and stability during strength training exercises such as squats, bench presses, and overhead presses. By including a squat rack in your home gym setup, you unlock the potential to engage various muscle groups effectively, including your legs, glutes, back, shoulders, and core.

Titan Fitness Stand

Squat racks also often come with additional features, such as pull-up bars, dip bars, or adjustable safety bars, which can further expand your workout repertoire. Owning a squat rack helps you perform these exercises safely and with proper form, reducing the risk of injury and ensuring maximum gains. Integrating a squat rack into your home gym is mandatory if you are serious about building strength, as it allows you to progress and lift heavier weights confidently.

The squat rack I recommend is Titan Fitness T-3 Series Short Squat Stand. The 1000-pound weight capacity will serve you well for most things you'd want to use it for. A huge plus is that it is also a low-ceiling rack, 72" in height, meaning that you can place it pretty much in any room. So, if you have some basement gym ideas on a budget, this one will put a smile on your face. It is also well made, meaning you won't get any squeaky noise or bends if under a heavy load. But just in case, you’ll get a 1-year long warranty. However, this thing will probably outlive you.

Barbell

If you're looking at even the most basic home gym, it most likely has at least a barbell. A barbell stands out as one of the best and most essential, and most cheap home gym equipment pieces due to its versatility, effectiveness, and adaptability in strength training.

Most people will agree that it is almost mandatory to have one. This seemingly simple piece of equipment forms the foundation for many exercises, including squats, deadlifts, bench presses, overhead presses, and rows, to name a few, which simultaneously engage multiple muscle groups. It is a vital piece of equipment and a wise investment for anyone looking to create an efficient and well-rounded home gym setup.

Rep sabre

Our recommended barbell is REP Sabre Barbell. It's perfect for those on a budget who desire quality. Its 700-pound capacity makes it ideal for heavy operations. The free-spinning sleeves make lifts easy. Any home gym will appreciate its versatility and durability.

You can choose between two weight options - 33lb and 44lb. The bar, shaft, and sleeve lengths will also vary depending on that choice. The bar takes 2-inch weight plates. This product is great for beginners and pros. And you also get a 30-day return policy with a 1-year warranty included. A full-on 10/10 from me!

Set Of Bumper Plates

This is another indispensable addition to your home gym setup, offering flexibility and functionality to complement your barbell training. Made from high-quality, durable materials, these plates are designed to withstand rigorous use and protect your floors from damage during heavy lifts if dropped.

When used with a barbell, bumper plates allow for precise weight adjustments, enabling you to perform various exercises at various intensity levels. From squats and deadlifts to bench presses and overhead presses, these plates provide the necessary resistance to challenge and strengthen your muscles.

Moreover, bumper plates can also be utilized effectively without a barbell. They can be employed for exercises like weighted lunges, Russian twists, and even makeshift kettlebells for swings and goblet squats. The versatility of bumper plates ensures that they are essential to any home gym setup, offering numerous opportunities for challenging and diverse workouts. Investing in a quality set of bumper plates is a wise choice, as it significantly expands your exercise repertoire, allowing you to make the most of your strength training sessions.

REP Black Bumper Plates

My budget suggestion is to go for the REP Black Bumper Plates. They pair nicely with my suggested REP Sabre barbell and fit the 2-inch sleeves. The plates also have a low bounce, which helps them absorb almost all of the fall damage when dropped, even from a more significant height or under a hefty load. You can also get them in various weights. From 10 pounds all the way to 45 pounds. Depending on how much you would like to work with.

The main thing is that they are top-quality and affordable, which is excellent in itself - but you can also buy them separately in pairs of your chosen weight or buy them as a premade set of 160 lbs to 340 lbs. And if you buy them as a whole set, they will cost you even less!

Set Of Dumbbells

A barbell requires you to invest in weight plates as well. Weight plates can be effective, but they also need you to get a barbell then. A squat rack sometimes requires you to invest in a barbell and, in turn, into weight plates. A bench is amazingly versatile if you have any or all of the pieces mentioned above of gear.

Dumbbells? They require nothing. Buy a set of dumbbells and nothing else - and you got yourself a starter home gym. The cheapest home gym setup, but still a gym setup. It doesn't get more budget than that!

Dumbbells enable you to perform numerous exercises targeting different muscle groups, such as bicep curls, tricep extensions, shoulder presses, lateral raises, and chest flies. They can also be used for compound movements, like lunges and squats, that engage multiple muscles at once for efficient and effective workouts.

One of the critical advantages of dumbbells is their capacity for unilateral training. This means you can work separately on each side of your body, promoting balanced muscle development and minimizing strength imbalances. Furthermore, using dumbbells challenges your stabilizer muscles, improving overall coordination, balance, and joint stability.

If you need help figuring out where to start or are on a limited budget, then go for a set of dumbbells. They will keep you happy and busy for a long time without investing further. They will last you forever, and if you feel the need - you can always upgrade at any point in your home gym-building journey.

CAP Dumbbell

These are the ones that I recommend you get as the budget pick - CAP Adjustable Dumbbell Weight Set. As with the barbell plates, the dumbbells can be bought as a set (25 lbs, up to a whopping 200 pounds!), or you can opt for the adjustable 52.5 lbs option to mix and match the plates to your liking. The 17-inch dumbbell is 5 pounds in weight, and the plates range from 1.25 lbs to 5 lbs.

You can customize them as it suits you, and once the plates are on, you can lock them in place with spinnable lock collars. The collars have a rubber edge that prevents them from getting loose. The dumbbells also have nice knurling that helps with grip!

Best Essential Gear Home Gym Equipment For Cardio

Incorporating cardio gear into your home gym setup is crucial for enhancing cardiovascular health, burning calories, improving endurance, and promoting overall fitness. If you have a serious exercise program, cardio is a core part of that program.

Cardio equipment allows for convenient, time-efficient workouts tailored to individual goals. You can do cardio whenever however long you want. And the best part of having cardio equipment as part of your home gym is that once you decide to do cardio, you can jump straight into it. No need to prepare, change clothes, make sure you've got everything sorted at home before you leave, or sometimes even travel to a good running spot to start the workout. Nothing like this will ever bother you again. And I will show you what cardio gym gear is essential and how you can get it on a budget!

Treadmill training

Treadmill

While a treadmill cannot replace traditional running outside, it still has its perks. A treadmill is essential for a home gym as it offers a reliable, versatile, and convenient way to perform various cardio workouts, regardless of the weather or time of day. It is also easier on your joints as opposed to running on pavement. It helps improve cardiovascular health, burn calories, and build endurance while allowing customized training routines.

PROForm City L-6

The PROForm City L-6 Treadmill, our recommended treadmill for your home gym, is an excellent budget pick because it delivers solid performance and essential features at an affordable price. Its compact design, easy storage, and various workout programs offer a perfect balance between functionality and cost for those building a home gym on a budget. The weight capacity on this one is 250 lb. The maximum speed is 8 mph, which is plenty. The 17.5’’ running surface is also large enough so that you don’t have that feeling like you’re going to fall off. It also has a built-in tablet holder, so if you like binge-watching your favorite show, you can do that while burning calories. Win-win!

PROForm City L-6 instagram

The 10-year warranty on the frame and 1 year for parts/labor is a great deal that should cover any unexpected breaks. The only thing to be wary of is that it has no incline and is long, 70.25 inches, requiring you to ensure ample space to fit the treadmill. Regarding the incline, if you decide to go for an incline treadmill, you can always get one later once your home gym is more established.

Elliptical

Treadmills are the most common cardio machines on the planet. But if treadmills aren't your thing, you might look closer at ellipticals.

An elliptical is essential for a home gym as it offers a low-impact, full-body cardio workout, engaging both upper and lower body muscles while being gentle on joints. It helps improve cardiovascular fitness, burn calories, and build endurance, making it a suitable alternative to traditional cardio machines.

Sunny Elliptical Machine

Sunny Health & Fitness Legacy Stepping Elliptical Machine is an excellent budget pick because it delivers a compact and convenient solution for those seeking an effective elliptical workout without having their wallet sucked dry.

It’s also super compact at 39.4’’ long x 26.4’’ wide. Because of how quiet it is, there are numerous ways to use it in your home gym while utilizing modern-day luxury, such as listening to a podcast or binge-watching your favorite show. And the best part is that it is just as effective as any other elliptical out there. It has a neat lighted digital monitor that allows you to track your stats. Nothing special. But it works.

You get to choose from 8 levels of resistance with a manual turn knob. And finally, the belt drive with its magnetic resistance makes for a super smooth and quiet ride, with an 11’’ stride length. And the belt drive also has low maintenance. If you’re looking to move the elliptical around the house, it weighs only 60 lbs, so no worries. To top it all off, you’ll get a 90-day return policy and a 3-year frame warranty with 180 days for parts. That's just fantastic value. Nobody needs a warranty until you need it. And this one is great!

Exercise Bike

Exercise bikes are the 2nd most common cardio machines in a gym or home gym environment. And for good reason. It provides a low-impact, effective cardio workout that strengthens the lower body and boosts cardiovascular health. Exercise bikes offer a range of resistance levels, making them suitable for users of all fitness levels, and they can help improve stamina and burn calories.

Pro-Form’s Studio Bike Pro 22 is a great choice for a budget home gym. It’s a high-quality bike that comes at a reasonable price point and will give you a complete training experience in the comfort of your home.

PROForm Studio Bike Pro 22

The first thing you’ll notice is that wonderful 22’’ touchscreen display. Not only does it show the information you may want to see when you’re working out, but it actually makes the entire exercise experience better. Apart from being big, the screen is also very vibrant.

IFit integration is another great thing about this bike. With it, you can automatically adjust the resistance as you ride because the workouts are led by trainers. This means that the only thing you need to focus on is your ride. The bike will simply adapt to your fitness level, so it’s good for both beginners and advanced users. If, by chance, you decide iFit is not for you (although that’s highly unlikely), you can just cancel it once your 30-day free trial is up.

PROForm Studio Bike Pro 22

The bike itself is built to last. It’s made of high-quality steel that’s resistant to corrosion and is overall very stable and durable. You also get a 9’’ (10 position) vertically, and 3’’ horizontally adjustable seat. You can also adjust the handlebars up to 3.75’’ (5 positions). The footprint is relatively standard at 21.9’’ W x 56.5’’ D/L x 54’’ H.

What makes it so suitable for home gyms is its portability. It has built-in wheels so you can just roll the 144 lb bike around your home or gym and use it wherever you want with ease.

Overall, this bike is a superb value for money. It’s high quality, easy to move, has a huge touchscreen display and comes with a free 30-day iFit trial. And on top of all that, you get a 10-year warranty on the frame, 2 years on parts and 1 year for labot! What’s not to like?

Rowing Machine

A rowing machine might not be the most abundant piece of cardio gear you might encounter in a home gym, but that doesn't take from the fact that a rowing machine is exceptionally effective.

It offers a full-body, low-impact cardio workout that targets major muscle groups, improves cardiovascular endurance, and promotes calorie burning. Engaging both upper and lower body muscles provides an efficient and balanced exercise option.

Concept 2 Rowerg Rower

The Black Concept 2 Rowerg Rower - Pm5 is the budget-pick rowing machine that I’d choose over others because it combines high-quality performance with an affordable price. It features 10 levels of air resistance and a comfortable and wide padded seat set at 14’’ above the ground. You can up it to 20’’.

The paddles are non-slip, and you also get an excellent digital monitor to keep track of all the critical data. It’s compatible with Bluetooth heart rate monitors and the free ErgData app for exercise analysis.

Concept 2 Rowerg Rower instagram

The handlebars are also non-slip, so you won't have an issue if you have sweaty palms. If you decide to place the rowing machine somewhere else, you have transportation wheels to help you. And if the surface is not leveled or is a bit uneven, you have floor stabilizers to make your rowing experience feel sturdy regardless of the machine's positioning.

It isn’t foldable, but while 8 feet long, it is still only 2 feet wide, meaning it won’t take as much space as some other row machine models. That’s very important if you’re limited on space. The max capacity is also high, at 500 lb.

Concept 2 allows users to experience a satisfying workout while staying within their budget, making it an excellent choice for those looking to add variety to their home gym cardio routine.

Best Essential Gear Home Gym Equipment For Working Out With Your Weight

Instead of relying on lifting incrementally heavier and heavier weights by utilizing various pieces of different-purpose equipment, some people like to take a more Spartan-like approach and use their own body weight as the tool of choice. Introducing this type of equipment into your home gym setup is critical as it enables you to perform bodyweight exercises that improve strength, flexibility, and balance. This equipment allows for a wide range of functional movements, promoting muscle growth and toning while providing an efficient workout that simultaneously targets multiple muscle groups.

Ab Mat

An Ab Mat is essential for an inexpensive home gym focused on bodyweight exercises because it effectively supports the lower back during core exercises, ensuring proper spinal alignment and maximizing the engagement of your abdominal muscles.

ROGUE Fitness Abmat

If you are looking for a great budget pick ab mat for your home gym, check out the ROGUE Fitness Abmat. Its construction, contoured design, and affordability make it a fantastic addition to your fitness arsenal. The dimensions are 14.5" L x 11.75" W x 2.75" H. This high-quality, soft-to-touch/firm-to-use Ab Mat offers excellent support and comfort, making it an essential addition to your home gym for an optimized bodyweight workout experience. The mat has shape retention, is moisture resistant, and is antibacterial. It’s also super easy to clean. To top it off, you get a 1-year warranty on the ab mat.

ROGUE Fitness Abmat instagram

Push-Up Bars

Push-ups are the vanilla way of building muscle. They take that experience to the next level. A home gym focused on bodyweight exercises because they enhance the standard push-up, allowing for a wider range of motion and minimizing wrist strain, ultimately providing more effective chest, shoulder, and triceps workouts.

CAP Bars

The CAP Pair of Push Up Bars is the recommended budget pick due to its sturdy construction, ergonomic design, and affordability. The pads' dimensions are 10.6 x 5.7 x 3.1 inches. These push-up bars offer enhanced foam-covered handles for improved grip, added stability with rubber pads, and ease of use, making them a valuable addition to your home gym for more effective bodyweight workouts.

Mat

Any beginner home gym should have a mat. It is focused on bodyweight exercises because it provides a comfortable and supportive surface for various workouts, protecting your joints and ensuring proper form during exercises such as planks, yoga poses, and stretches.

REP Exercise Mat

My recommendation for an exercise mat is - REP Exercise Mat. It has a very durable construction, a non-slip surface, is super lightweight, and exceptional value for money. Its resistance to wear is a fan favorite with this product as it allows for years of continuous usage without any signs of wear. If properly taken care of, this one could last you for decades.

The REP mat is filled with 1.5’’ thick foam that provides enough padding. The dimensions are 48”(L) x24”(W) x1.5”(H), enough for stretching, yoga, gymnastics, and cardio, while still being small enough to fit almost anywhere. If you plan to store it, remember that folding it is not recommended.

Jump Ropes

Jump ropes are essential in a home gym when focusing on bodyweight exercises, as they provide an excellent cardio workout and improve coordination, agility, muscular strength, and endurance. If you want to lose weight, build abs, or gain speed, but in a fun and challenging way - go for the jump rope routine. It might seem silly and like child's play. But you'd be surprised by the astonishing results that they can evoke.

WOD Nation Speed Jump Rope

The WOD Nation Speed Jump Rope is my top budget pick because it delivers a smooth, fast, customizable experience suitable for any fitness level. You get 8 colors to choose from black, blue, gray, orange, pink, purple, red, and yellow. I'm sure you’ll be able to find one that is to your liking. Its durable surgical steel construction, easily adjustable cable length, and precision ball bearings ensure a comfortable and efficient workout that can be tailored to your specific needs. The handles are 6 inches long. The cable is 2.5mm thick, and the full length of the jump cable is 10 feet.

This jump rope is a highly versatile and cost-effective addition to your home gym for those seeking a dynamic and engaging way to work out with their body weight. Just keep in mind that unlike Rocky Balboa, who goes anywhere with his jump rope, this one is recommended to only be used on a smooth surface. Rough surfaces such as cement or asphalt might damage the coating on the steel cables and start causing rust to appear.

WOD Nation Speed Jump Rope instagram

The rope cables use a patented 4-bearing system that feels smooth, doesn’t produce noise, and prevents entanglement. To further accommodate you, you’ll also get extra cable included for free, just in case. And a 1-year warranty.

Pull-Up Assist Bands

Pull-up assist bands are indispensable for a simple home gym when incorporating bodyweight exercises, as they offer assistance in performing pull-ups and help build upper body strength progressively. There is no need to strain yourself and try doing pull-ups if your body isn't ready for them. Pull-ups are hard. And there is a good reason why assist bands are a thing. Also, using resistance bands for exercise might seem silly or simplistic, but studies suggest the effects of using resistance bands is similar when compared to doing the same with conventional devices. They will help you with the transition from a novice into a pull-up superstar in a practical yet inexpensive manner.

ROGUE Bands

My budget-friendly recommendation, the ROGUE Echo Resistance Bands, stands out due to their exceptional durability and versatility. Crafted from high-quality natural latex rubber, these bands are ideal for various exercises, including assisted pull-ups, stretching, and mobility work, without the risk of them unexpectedly snapping. You can buy them in singles or pairs, and you can choose from 8 resistance levels, each color-coded. They are 41’’ long, each of them. They are also accompanied by a 1-year warranty.

ROGUE Bands instagram

Exercise Sliders

Exercise sliders are an essential addition to any home gym focused on bodyweight workouts, as they provide an engaging way to challenge your core and increase overall stability. These compact and portable tools enhance various exercises by introducing sliding motions that demand greater muscle engagement.

A AZURELIFE Sliders

My budget choice is A AZURELIFE Exercise Core Sliders. They are often praised for their dual-sided design, accommodating use on carpet and hard floors. They are 7’’ in diameter. One side is foam, while the other is plastic, depending on whether you want to use the pads on a carpet or a hard surface. Just be wary of how you flip them, as they can slip if you, for example, place the plastic surface on a slippery floor. With their high-quality construction and affordable price point, these sliders are an excellent option for diversifying your bodyweight exercises and making your home workouts more effective and versatile.

Medicine Balls

I've seen many people mistake these for basketballs or volleyballs until they pick them up, and you see the confusion on their faces. Medicine balls offer a versatile way to add resistance to various functional movements, promoting muscle strength, endurance, and core stability. Medicine balls are also a fantastic and effective way to increase your overall agility. With their dynamic nature, medicine balls can elevate your workouts, making them more challenging and engaging. For example, you can improve the basic squats, push-ups, lunges, and many more with a medicine ball. Or you can do some of the many whole body exercises - Wall ball, Medicine Ball Slams.

Yes4All Soft Wall Medicine Ball

The Yes4All Soft Wall Medicine Ball stands out as a budget-friendly option. You can get these as a 6-pounder, all the way up to 30 lbs medicine balls. But the 20 lbs one offers the most for the money spent. It balances durability and softness. You get three color options: vibrant, navy camo, or pure black, and the price may change depending on your choice. The ball has the standard 12.5-inch diameter. Its compact design and weight range make it an excellent addition to your home gym routine, allowing you to push your limits and explore new exercises at an affordable price.

Best Essential Gear Home Gym Equipment for Weightlifting

When you think of a gym, you most likely think of weightlifting. Because of this, it is only natural to include that type of equipment in your home gym. This type of gear is essential to build strength and muscle mass and improve overall fitness. Weightlifting gear allows you to perform targeted exercises that engage multiple muscle groups, enhancing your progress and providing a well-rounded workout experience. Investing in quality weightlifting equipment will optimize your training and pave the way for tangible, long-lasting results.

Power Rack

You can only have a weightlifting-specific home gym with a power rack, which offers a safe and adaptable spot for squats, bench presses, and deadlifts. Thanks to its adjustable pins and catches, a power rack may help you get in shape without risking your health. Sometimes people refer to a power rack as the Jack of all Trades when it comes to gym equipment. And with good reason. With one, you can target almost all muscle groups.

PR-1050 Short Power Rack

The PR-1050 Short Power Rack is my top selection for the money because of its low price, high quality, and convenient size. You can load up to 700 pounds onto the rack. But if you’re using the pull-up bar or the dip station, a maximum of 400 lb is recommended. The PR-1050 Power Rack has the following dimensions: 58 W x 48 L x 72 H inches. Of that, you have 44.1’’ W x 26’’ L working area. The weight of the rack is 123 lbs. You can work on your chest, back, shoulders, triceps, pull-us, bench press, and even use it with resistance bands. It is a true jack of all trades when it comes to gym equipment. Few pieces of gym gear will offer this much variety. The uprights are numbered for easier navigation and have 1’’ holes with 2’’ spacing between them. This gives you plenty of adjustment options.

You don't even have to skip leg day. It won't provide you with various leg exercises, but you can do hanging leg raises. You're covered if your home gym is empty and you get this machine. It's that simple.

PR-1050 Short Power Rack instagram

You'll also enjoy a Limited Lifetime Warranty. While that sounds weird, as if they are counting on your limited lifespan or something like that, it actually means that REP will fix or replace anything unless it is caused by anything other than defects that happened in the manufacturing process. It's an excellent investment for your home gym since it provides various exercises for people of varying fitness levels and tastes.

Olympic Weightlifting Barbell

In order to do complex exercises that work for numerous muscle groups at once, a professional-grade instrument like an Olympic weightlifting barbell is required in any weightlifting-oriented home gym. It can withstand significant weight, so you may train with complete confidence.

ROGUE Echo Bar 2.0

For its low price and excellent quality construction (especially its finish and knurling), I suggest the ROGUE Echo Bar 2.0. This barbell is great for new and seasoned weightlifters because of its low cost without sacrificing performance. Remember that, unlike regular barbells, which take 1" or 2" plates, an Olympic barbell will take only a 2" diameter weight plate. So be prepared. The 44lb(20kg) naked bar is plenty enough to do some basic exercises, but if you want a proper workout, get yourself some 2-inch weight plates(I've left a budget recommendation for plates above).

ROGUE Echo Bar 2.0 instagram

The weight limit on this solid steel bar is 1000 lbs. So unless you plan on breaking world records, that will be more than enough. Dual knurl marks with medium knurling for a firm grip should help you in lifting. The sleeve length is 16.4", meaning it can take on a lot of plates. The tensile strength of the 2.0 is 190,000 PSI. The shaft is 52", and the full length of the bar is 86.75". But all in all, if you're building the best home gym on a budget, an Olympic barbell should definitely be included.

Best Essential Gear Home Gym Equipment for Fitness

Some say fitness is a training regime, while others swear it is a way of life. I'll leave that for you to decide. But if you're into fitness, having the correct gear in your home gym can be extremely rewarding. Also, if you're serious about increasing your functional strength, stamina, and general fitness, you must outfit your home gym with critical fitnessequipment. With its high-intensity exercises and often changing programming, fitness requires flexible and adaptable equipment.

Kettlebell

A kettlebell is essential for a home gym because it offers a versatile, compact, and effective tool for weightlifting, strength training, and cardio. Its unique design enables various exercises such as swings, goblet squats, deadlifts, clean and presses, farmer’s walks, snatches, etc. A kettlebell lets you target multiple muscle groups and improve functional strength.

Hex Dumbbells

Because of their many uses in various weightlifting exercises and HIIT exercises, hex dumbbells are a must-have for any home gym serious about getting in shape. Their one-of-a-kind hexagonal form keeps them from rolling, so they won't cause any accidents during your workouts.

Hex dumbbells are also often rubber-coated, meaning they won't damage the floor. As for the benefits of getting hex dumbbells as opposed to sticking to the regular ones - with a hex dumbbell, you can do any exercise that you can with a traditional dumbbell, but the flat surface on a hex dumbbell also allows for some additional activities: dumbbell push-ups, renegade rows, and plank taps.

Yes4All Hex Dumbbells

If you're looking for a set of dumbbells that won't break the bank but will still get the job done, Yes4All Rubber Grip Encased Hex Dumbbells are a great option. You can buy them in a wide range of weight variations, ranging from 5 lbs to 50 lbs. They are made from cast iron with a rubber material forming a hexagonal shape.

The rubber handle helps with grip and prevents slippage. It has a PVC coating that prevents that rubbery odor that rubber dumbbells have. That one is a plus. You get a full 60-day return policy when you get these, along with a 5-year warranty. If you want to become stronger and have better muscle tone without breaking the bank, this vital equipment is a must-have for your home gym.

Plyo Box

If you've stuck around until now, you might need clarification about why I'm suggesting you get a wooden box for your home gym. I know these suggestions are for people on a budget, but come on. A wooden box? Well, yeah. Plyometric boxes, also known as plyo boxes, might seem like the odd one out of the bunch, but they are actually unique tools for your body! Explosive and functional workouts are crucial for weightlifting, strength, and conditioning, and a plyo box is a must-have for every home gym. You can strengthen your lower body, improve your coordination and balance, jump, sprint, throw, and generally challenge your core and upper body all at once by using a plyo box.

Yes4All 3 in 1 Wooden Plyo Box

The Yes4All 3 in 1 Wooden Plyo Box is recommended for those on a tighter budget. You can get the box in three options: regular plywood, moss brown colored plywood wood, or moss brown colored plywood plus resistance bands. The price will differ for each three. The boxes are available in four sizes, ranging from a 16 x 14 12-inch box to a 20 x 18 x 16-inch box. So regardless of what box size you choose, you can position it so that each variation offers 3 sizes respectively. The edges are smooth and sanded. So no fear of splinters.

Also, if you hit the box, you have a much lower chance of injuring yourself. These plyo boxes can hold up to 450 pounds and have a non-slip surface. The ability to do various plyometric drills on a budget makes it an invaluable asset to any home gym. Depending on your aesthetic needs and skill level, you can get them in different colors and sizes.

Other Useful Equipment You May Need

You can improve your workouts and keep your home gym safe by investing in a few ancillary things in addition to the main pieces of equipment. Equipment like ab rollers makes it easier to focus on core muscles, while suitable flooring prevents damage to your floors and makes working out more pleasant. Your home gym will be more functional, secure, and pleasurable to use with the addition of these pieces of equipment.

Ab Roller

When it comes to strengthening and stabilizing your core, an Ab Roller is a must-have piece of equipment for any home gym. For a complete exercise, you need this small and flexible device.

EnterSports Ab Rollers Wheel Kit

The EnterSports Ab Rollers Wheel Kit is the best value option since it has a high-quality, solid roller and a pleasant grip without spending much. It’s made from stainless steel and plastic. But it is built to withstand scrutiny since it has a 556 lb weight limit. You really need to go a length to damage this one. You’re buying this for the roller, but you actually get a whole kit that also contains 2 knee pads, 2 push-up bars, and 2 resistance bands. Fantastic deal for a home workout station.

Flooring

Protecting your floors, giving your joints some extra padding, and making your home gym a pleasant place to work out are all reasons to invest in quality flooring.

JIGMATS Interlocking Foam Mats

Because of its low price and convenient layout, JIGMATS Interlocking Foam Mats are the go-to affordable option. These mats are high-density, non-toxic foam and are simple to construct, making them safe and practical for use in a home gym. You can buy them in their standard gray color or opt for the blue-colored option to introduce a bit of flavor into your home gym.

Each package contains 18 tiles. The tiles are 0.4’’ thick, offering plenty of absorption, and when fully assembled, they cover a space of 18 square feet. With each tile being 12.2’’ x 12.2’’. The best thing about them is that you can use them as flooring. Because of their shape memory, they will retain their original form even when under pressure. And you can place any piece of equipment, regardless of weight, onto them without fear of damaging them.

FAQ

Is It Cheaper to Go to a Gym or Make a Home Gym?

It depends on your personal preferences and goals. A gym membership is usually cheaper upfront but requires ongoing monthly payments. A home gym has a higher initial investment but eliminates monthly fees, potentially saving money in the long run if you use it consistently.

Also, keep in mind that once you break even with the upfront cost of a home gym, you’ll forever have an advantage over choosing a gym membership. Plus, the equipment in your home gym is yours and completely paid for.

Is It Worth Investing in a Home Gym?

Yes, investing in a home gym is worth it if you value convenience and privacy and plan to exercise consistently, as it saves time and potentially money in the long run compared to a gym membership.

The time it takes for a home gym investment to pay off financially depends on the cost of your home gym setup and the monthly gym membership fees. To determine the breakeven point, divide the total cost of your home gym by the monthly gym membership fee. For example, if your home gym costs $1,000 and your gym membership is $50 per month, the investment would take 20 months to pay off financially ($1,000 / $50 = 20 months).

But you also have to factor in other expenses, such as the time and cost of travel to and from the gym.

Conclusion

How to build a home gym? You can make one on a budget if you plan ahead and buy the right tools. By focusing on the necessary equipment for running, weightlifting, bodyweight exercises, and other valuable tools, you can build a unique workout space that works well for you.

Remember that buying a home gym can save you money in the long run and make your fitness journey more manageable and more flexible.
