What Are the Benefits of Rubber Coated Kettlebells?

1. Durability

One of the main benefits of rubber kettlebells is the protective rubber. Over time, the repeated use of the kettlebells causing contact with the floor or each other makes the metal coating wear down.

The rubber kettlebell coating provides a protective layer between the contact points and metal, increasing the kettlebell's durability.

2. Versatility

Rubber coated kettlebells offer a wide range of versatile uses which make them an excellent addition to a home gym set-up.

With a big range of weight options available, rubber coated kettlebells can be used by beginner and elite athletes performing both compound and accessory exercises.

Unlike traditional gym machines, rubber coated kettlebells can be used with one or two hands, making them perfect for rehabilitation exercises or to work on muscular imbalances.

What to Look For in Rubber Coated Kettlebells?

Here’s what to look for when purchasing rubber coated kettlebells:

1. Comfort

The last thing you want to be doing is constantly adjusting the kettlebell or worrying about hand pain due to an uncomfortable hand position. With a comfortable kettlebell handle, you can shift all your focus to performing the correct technique and working through the hard reps.

Before purchasing, experiment with different kettlebell sizes and handles at your local gym and decide which one best suits you.

2. Durability

Durability refers to how long the kettlebell will last without wearing down and/ or breaking. If you're making a big investment, you want the kettlebell to last years or even your whole lifting career.

Tips From the Champ

With rubber coated kettlebells, make sure to check the type of rubber and coating thickness, both of which will affect the durability with repeated, heavy use.
Kettlebells can be cast in multiple ways, with the casting correlating to durability. If it’s cast as a whole unit rather than welded, you don’t need to worry about sharp edges that might dig into the rubber and chip it off.

3. Price/Quality

Investing in a home gym set-up can be expensive, even when purchasing some of the cheaper equipment and accessories.

When considering the price, compare the above factors to the amount the kettlebell costs and decide how much you're getting for the money you're spending.

Your budget will determine the type of rubber coated kettlebell you can afford and how many you're able to invest in.

4. Training Type

Make sure to consider your type of training and what kind of movements you’ll be performing.

If your training consists of primarily kettlebell work, you’ll need something durable and high-quality. If you're a beginner or only using the kettlebell for some exercises, a more basic rubber coated kettlebell may suffice.

On top of this, if you're wanting to perform multiple kettlebell exercises in quick succession, consider buying a kettlebell set with an adjustable handle feature.

5. Weight Range/Maximum Weight

Rubber coated kettlebells are available to be purchased in a wide weight range and go up to different maximum weight amounts depending on the brand.

The weight range you need depends on the exercise type you’ll be performing. If you're doing mainly compound exercises, you’ll need a higher range. Accessory exercises will most likely require a lower weight range.

With maximum weight, if you're an elite-level athlete, you’ll need a much higher max weight compared to a beginner.

FAQs

Are Rubber Coated Weights Better?

The main advantage of using rubber coated weights over normal ones is the added durability. The rubber casing provides a protective coating that reduces the contact between the metal weight and the floor, helping them to last for a longer amount of time.

Can You Drop Rubber Coated Weights?

Whilst the rubber coating provides a protective coating, it's still better not to drop them. If you're using very heavy weights and can't control them down to the floor, it most likely won't be an issue with the rubber layer but it shouldn't become a habit.

However, the added protection provided by the rubber layer does provide a little more freedom to drop them now and again if you need to.

Why Do Rubber Coated Weights Feel Lighter?

Rubber coated weights feel lighter than metal weights due to the different densities. Metal weights are more dense, meaning they will feel much heavier at the same size.

Summary - Which Rubber Coated Kettlebell Is The Best?

Kettlebells are very versatile and useful pieces of workout equipment that can be used for a variety of gym exercises. The rubber coating increases the durability by providing a protective layer between the metal and the contact area.

The Rogue kettlebells are my top pick overall rubber coated kettlebell choice, scoring the highest total for comfort, durability, and weight size diversity.
