Syria’s Super-Heavyweight Contender

Asaad Man was born on November 20th, 1993, and he’s a Syrian weightlifter who competes in the +109 kg category, He’s well-known for winning a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. As far as his more recent achievements go, he won a gold medal in the clean and jerk at the 2022 Mediterranean Games and victories at the 2024 Asian Weightlifting Championships. He’s coached by Qais Asaad and he studied at the Tishreen University. 

Asaad Man’s career has been a rollercoaster with standout moments and some setbacks. Early on, he competed in the +94 kg weight class at the 2010 Asian Youth Weightlifting Championships. His career hit a bump when he was banned for 2 years because he tested positive for metandienone. Luckily, he managed to bounce back from it. 

In 2016, he competed in the +105 kg category at the Rio Olympics and finished 15th with a total of 400 kg (180 kg snatch, 200 kg clean and jerk). He showed progress at the 2018 Asian Games, where he ranked 5th with a total of 410 kg (188 kg snatch, 222 kg clean and jerk).

His career took a major leap at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where he won a bronze medal in the +109 kg category with a total of 424 kg (190 kg snatch, 234 kg clean and jerk). This was Syria’s first Olympic medal in weightlifting. 

In 2022, he won a gold medal in the clean and jerk at the Mediterranean Games. He lifted 247 kg. He also got a silver medal in the snatch with a lift of 197 kg. 

A year later, at the World Weightlifting Championships, he won a bronze medal with a total of 445 kg.

More recently, he won the +109 kg event at the 2024 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent with a total of 444 kg.
