Liu Huanhua (China) Clinches Gold in Men’s 102 kg Weightlifting at the Paris 2024 Olympics
Author:
The 102 kg category saw some of the fiercest competition throughout the weightlifting event yet. Mere points separated the three spots at the Olympic podium, and it was anyone’s game.
Huanhua Liu from the People’s Republic of China came out on top as he won a dramatic victory and acquired the fold medal with a lifted total of 406 kg!
Snatch
Liu succeeded on all 3 of his snatch attempts. He started off with 178 kg, after which he increased the weight to 183 kg. He finalized the snatch with a surefire 186 kg, tying him and Karapetyan for 1st place at this phase. Many lifters failed on their third attempt, with many of the possible lifts jeopardizing the current rankings.

Clean and Jerk
Liu didn’t play around in the Clean and Jerk after starting off with a mighty 220 kg lift and succeeding. This lift automatically propelled him to the top of the table. However, Liu put his medal in question after failing his second (228 kg) and third (233 kg) attempts, leaving a lot of room for his rivals to grab the victory for themselves.
The category didn’t fall short of surprises, as six out of the ten athletes who finished failed their second C&J attempt, while only Mora Romero succeeded in his third attempt. No one could tell who had secured a place on the podium until the very last moment. It was an epic thrill to witness.
At just 22 years old, and participating in his first-ever Olympics, Liu Hanhua not only fulfilled his dreams and ambitions but also exceeded expectations set by his previous records, including a WR total of 413 kg (earlier this year).
His victory is also of historic significance as it is the first Olympic gold in a weight class over 100 kg. Liu, with his physical prowess and strategic mastery, managed to surpass the achievements of his hero and inspiration, Lyu Xiaojun.
The silver medal was won by Akbar Djuraev from Uzbekistan (404 kg total), while the bronze medal went to Yauheni Tsikhantsou (402 kg total). The battle for the first three places was intense as only 2 kilograms separated each of the medalists.
