2024 Olympic Games, Day 3 Recap – Women’s 71 kg: Olympic Snatch Record from Reeves, While Toma Loredana Fails Her Olympic Dream

The Olympic Games are on its equator where masterful lifters are defeating their rivals with no regret. Day 3 was full of eye-grabbing moments as a highly competitive female weight category is at the podium today.
Female weightlifters continue to impress the audience with impeccable moments, heavy weights on the bar, and new Olympic records. Today they were highly tune to outperform their rivals and gain their goals by winning the Olympic medal. The competition in the 71-kg category proved the strong spirit as every athlete did their best to show more weights compared to their prior performances.
It’s supposed to be an intriguing performance. Keep watching this overview and you’ll know who dominated in this competition and who failed to meet the expectations.

Athletes’ presentation
Today twelve motivated female weightlifters were performing at the South Paris Arena 6 trying to outshine at the Olympics. So, we can distinguish three of the division’s most talented contenders who stand out from the rest opponents.
TOMA Loredana, aka Tomanator, is a two-time World Champion and five-time European Champion, holding the current world record in Snatch. She’s a first-time Olympian who has big ambitions to win an Olympic gold.
PALACIOS DAJOMES Angie Paola, an Ecuadorian two-time youth world champion, a three-time gold medalist at the Pan American Champs. She participated in the competition at Tokyo 2020, resulting in a sixth-place finish overall. She’s a five-time world championship medalist in the 71-kg weight class.
REEVES Olivia, the 2023 World Championships and Pan American Champs bronze medalist, and a Champion of the 2023 Pan Am Games. She’s a first-time Olympian, and a five-time world championships medalist, winning two bronzes and a silver in 2023.
Reeves also won three gold medals at the 2024 World Cup in Phuket lifting all personal bests, she finished ahead of the three world record holders in the category.
All participants showed a decent performance presenting a worthy competition by lifting heavy weights they were increasing with each attempt.
Snatch
The performance in the Snatch exercise started from 90 kg. The athletes showed good performance, with minimum red lights, however, one participant from the Phillipines Sarno Vanessa bombed out failing to lift 100 kg in all three attempts.
So, here are the names of weightlifters who managed to get to the Top 6:
4: Sanchez Mari Leivis (COL) – 112 kg
5: Valodzka Siuzanna (AIN) – 111 kg
6: Fegue Marie (FRA) – 110 kg
Top 3 leaders’ results
Now let’s analyze the Top 3 lifters’ performance:
1: Olivia Reeves (USA) – 117 kg
2: Palacios Dajomes A. (ECU) – 116 kg
3: Toma Loredana Elena (ROU) – 115 kg
Toma Loredana Elena from Romania ended this session with the following lifts: 111 kg on the first lift, the second – 115 kg that resulted with success, and the last of 117 kg finished with no lift.
The second place went to Palacios Dajomes A. from Ecuador. She made the first attempt at 110 kg which was successful. She made a 114 kg lift on the second attempt, and finalized her performance with 116 kg. So, she did 3/3 good lifts today.
The first place went to Olivia Reeves from the USA who snatched 112 kg at the first attempt, then 115 kg at the second, and ordered 117 kg, which brought her a convincing victory. The American lifter succeeded to set a new Olympic record in this session.
Snatch results:
Summarizing the Snatch session, we can be proud of the promising American lifter Olivia Reeves who constantly makes progress and shows better weights each competition. She made a great success by shattering a new Olympic record in Snatch of 117 kg at her first Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, her opponents Palacios Dajomes and Toma Loredana fell behind her with a minimal weight gap of one and two kilos respectively.
Clean & Jerk
The contest in the Clean & Jerk started with a weight of 115 kg. This striking round brought us the following Top 6 lifters who have already created the Olympic history:
4: Valodzka Siuzanna (AIN) – 135 kg
5: Fegue Marie (FRA) – 133 kg
6: Chen Wen-Huei (TPE) – 133 kg
Top 3 leaders’ results
Let’s describe the performance of the Top 3 lifters:
1: Olivia Reeves (USA) – 145 kg
2: Sanchez Mari Leivis (COL) – 145 kg
3: Palacios Dajomes A. (ECU) – 140 kg
Palacios Dajomes A. from Ecuador secured third place: she lifted 135 kg on the first attempt; at the second attempt she coped with 138 kg. And at the final lift, she lifted 140 kg.
The silver medalist in this battle became Sanchez Mari Leivis from Colombia. Today she started her performance with 135 kg, then 140 kg she lifted with success, and finalized with an attempt of 145 kg which brought her the second spot. Thus, today she showed 3/3 perfect lifts.
Olivia Reeves from the USA became the winner in the 71-kg weight division. She started from 140 kg, then lifted 5 kilos more that was 145 kg on the second attempt. Her last attempt of 150 kg resulted with red lights.
Clean & Jerk results:
This round brought us unexpected outcomes: Sarno Vanessa from the Phillipines withdrew from the competition. Moreover, the Romanian powerhouse Toma Loredana disappointed everyone with her poor performance: she didn’t lift any weight she ordered – 131 kg, 133 kg, and 134 kg. Today wasn’t her day, as she missed her Olympic medal.
While the leaders performed well, ordering almost equal weights on the bar. Again, the success was on Reeves’s side who managed to clinch gold.

🥈Sanchez Mari Leivis (COL) – 257 kg
🥉 Palacios Dajomes A. (ECU) – 256 kg
4 Valodzka Siuzanna (AIN) – 246 kg
5 Fegue Marie (FRA) – 243 kg
6 Chen Wen-Huei (TPE) – 236 kg
The gold medalist in the category was Olivia Reeves from the USA who did 262 kg overall.
The silver medalist became Sanches Mari Leivis from Colombia who finished with 257 kg, 5 kilos less than her American contender.
Palacios Dajomes A. from Ecuador took bronze thanks to her total of 256 kg.
Final thoughts
Today’s performance in the Women’s 71 kg category showed us constant progress of a promising young lifter from the USA Olivia Reeves who proved once more her competitiveness and potential. She set a new Olympic record in Snatch and got three gold medals to her country.
While the supposed leader Toma Loredana Elena showed awful results by failing to make her Olympic dream come true.
All in all, we witnessed a great competition among world-level powerhouses who did their best lifts to get the decent place in the Olympic ranking.
