IWF Weightlifting World Cup 2024, Day 8 Recap – Women’s 71 kg

Day 8 of the IWF World Cup in Phuket continues to impress us with remarkable moments, heavy opening weights on the bar, and new mind-blowing records.

Today female lifters were highly set to outperform their opponents and gain their goals trying to win quotas for the Olympics.

The competition in the 71-kg category proved the warrior’s spirit as every athlete did their best to get the maximum weights done for the country’s triumph.

Athletes Presentation 

With 11 female athletes on the starting list, we’re presenting the Top leaders who are supposed to be the best ones in the category with impressive lifting accomplishments.

Here’s the list of the Top names in the Women’s 71-kg division:

LIAO Guifang, the current World and Asian Champion who holds two world records in the process.

TOMA Loredana, known as Tomanator, is a two-time World Champion and five-time European Champion, holding the current world record in Snatch.

PALACIOS DAJOMES Angie Paola, an Ecuadorian two-time youth world champion, a three-time gold medalist at the Pan American Champs.

REEVES Olivia, the 2023 World Championships and Pan American Champs bronze medalist, and a Champion of the 2023 Pan Am Games.

Snatch results 

The performance in the Snatch exercise started from 99 kg.

  • 10: STURLUDOTTIR Eyglo Fanndal – 106 kg
  • 9:  SCHWEIZER Lisa Marie – 107 kg
  • 8: VALODZKA Siuzanna – 108 kg
  • 7: MIRABAL FERIA Yeniuska – 109 kg
  • 6: SANCHEZ PERINAN Mari – 110 kg
  • 5: SARNO Vanessa – 110  kg
  • 4: PALACIOS DAJOMES Angie – 113 kg

On this contest day, 42 % of all attempts were successful.

Top 3 leaders’ results

Now let’s analyze the Top 3 lifters’ performance:

  • 🥉: LIAO Guifang – 115 kg
  • 🥈: SONG Kuk Hyang – 115 kg
  • 🥇: REEVES Olivia Lynn – 118 kg

LIAO Guifang from China secured the bronze medal in the exercise: she snatched 115 kg on the first attempt successfully, then increased the weight by 5 kilos, but didn’t lift 120 kg on the second attempt. She managed to lift the same weight of 120 kg on the third attempt, but failed to use this chance.

Southern Korean lifter Song Kuk Hyang managed to lift 115 kg on the first attempt, the second lift of 120 kg resulted in no lift. Trying to repeat the lift of 120 kg on the third attempt she failed again.

The American weightlifter Olivia Reeves lifted 112 kg on the first attempt, then ordered 115 kg on the second attempt and lifted it successfully. At the third attempt Reeves performed a lift of 118 kg with success.

It needs to be mentioned that the Italian Giulia Miserendino bombed out of the competition: she failed to lift 103 kg on the first and second attempts, while refusing to perform the third lift.

Clean & Jerk results 

The contest in the Clean & Jerk discipline started with a weight of 122 kg.

  • 10: STURLUDOTTIR Eyglo Fanndal – 130 kg
  • 9: MACROHON Kristel – 130 kg
  • 8: PALACIOS DAJOMES Angie – 132 kg
  • 7: ALWINE Meredith Leigh – 133 kg
  • 6: SARNO Vanessa – 135 kg
  • 5: Eze Joy Ogbonne – 136 kg
  • 4: CHEN Wen-Huei – 141 kg

On this contest day, 49 % of all attempts were successful.

Top 3 leaders’ results

Let’s describe the performance of the Top 3 lifters:

  • 🥉: SONG Kuk Hyang – 146 kg
  • 🥈: LIAO Guifang – 149 kg
  • 🥇: REEVES Olivia Lynn – 150 kg

The bronze medalist became Song Kuk Hyang from North Korea: she lifted 146 kg on the first attempt with success, then tried to cope with 154 kg at the first lift but failed this attempt. The third lift of the same weight of 154 kg resulted in no lift as well.

The silver medalist was LIAO Guifang from China: she ordered 149 kg on the first attempt but failed it. The second attempt of the same weight resulted successfully. The third attempt of 154 kg Guifang didn’t manage to lift.

The US weightlifter Olivia Reeves lifted 142 kg at the first attempt, then she increased the weight by 5 kilos to lift 147 kg and finished with success. The third attempt of 150 kg finished with triumph. This way she succeeded in setting a personal best by 3 kilos more.

  • 🥉SONG Kuk Hyang – 261 kg
  • 4 CHEN Wen-Huei  – 246  kg

The third place and bronze went to Song Kuk Hyang who lifted 261 kg in total.

The silver medalist was Liao Guifang from China who got 264 kg overall.

The winner in the category became Olivia Reeves from the USA with a total result of 268 kg. Today she succeeded in improving her PR in total.

The Verdict 

Today’s performance in the Women’s 71-kg division proved that the American weightlifter Olivia Reeves is highly determined to compete at the Olympic Games. The Chinese team also feels highly motivated to prevail against opponents and send the most powerful lifters to the Olympics in Paris.
