With just a few weeks left until the start of the Olympic Games, our team, along with our founder Oleksiy Torokhtiy, traveled to Italy to visit their national weightlifting team and spend some time with Nino Pizzolato – one of their stars and a contender for a medal spot in the 89 kg category.

During our visit to Italy, we were immersed in the intense training process that Nino is currently undergoing before the Games. We had the opportunity to participate in some of his sessions, such as the back squat one that you can see in this video.

In this session, Nino and Oleksiy engaged in a pyramid type of workout, with each weight being squatted for two reps before it was increased by a certain amount. The goal was to reach 210 kg for two and then push beyond until failure.

At the start of the session, the weight increased dramatically from the barbell to 70 kg to 120 kg to 160 kg to 190 kg. However, once they got close to the 200 kg mark, the weight started going up with only 10-20 kg max, and the next reps were performed at 210 kg, 230 kg, and then 250 kg, which is when things got really difficult for the two athletes.

When it was time to squat 270 kg for two reps, Nino managed to do it with difficulty, really struggling with the second repetition. As for Oleksiy, he managed to do only one rep with 270 kg on the barbell and decided not to try again and move to 280 kg.

Considering how much Nino struggled with 270 kg, the goal was to do at least one rep of 280 kg, which he managed; however, on the second rep, he could not get back up and had to let the barbell go.

To finish the session, they had to go back down from 280 kg to 210 kg and perform each weight for four reps before lowering the kilograms. Behind the scenes, Nino shared with the team and Oleksiy that the secret to his strong legs is consistent training and following the advice and guidance of his coaches.

After training with him, we can see why this method has been so successful for Nino and has helped him reach success in the world of weightlifting.
