The IWF Allocates The World Championships in 2027 and 2028

At the IWF Execute Board meeting held on the 29th of March in Phuket, Thailand, it was decided that the World Championships in 2027 and 2028 will be held in Armenia and Venezuela, respectively.

After the 2023 European Championships were successfully hosted in Yerevan and Caracas was a great host to the recent Pan-American competition, the IWF board decided that they are also suitable choices for the second biggest event for weightlifters.

Along with these two senior competitions, the executive board also awarded the organization of the 2026 World Youth Championships to Argentina. After the meeting, the prescient of the IWF, Mohammed Jalood said:

We had two very interesting and professional candidates for our World Championships, so we naturally opted for this double award. This also brings further stability to our calendar and allows more time to prepare and successfully deliver two great competitions. After Ningbo, in China, we travel to Europe in 2027 and to the Americas in 2028 – three successive World Championships in three different continents,”

In addition to the allocation of these major events for the sport, the board discussed other important topics, including: 

  • The approval of the first IWF anthem
  • The decision of the IWF Technical Committee to reduce the bodyweight categories for both men and women from ten to eight.
  • The approval of the audited IWF 2023 Financial report.
  • The updated report is regarding the final preparation for the Olympic Games in the summer.
  • Updated reports on the IWF Anti-Doping Programme, IWF Refugee Team, and the IWF Sustainability Project.
