Mirabai Chanu’s Triumphant Comeback
Indian weightlifting icon Mirabai Chanu made a stunning return to competition on 25 August 2025 at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad – her first appearance since narrowly missing a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Back in her original 48 kg category after the IWF scrapped the 49 kg class, she lifted a total of 193 kg – 84 kg snatch and 109 kg clean & jerk – shattering Commonwealth Championship records in all three segments: snatch, clean & jerk and total.
Her performance reaffirmed her status as one of the sport’s fiercest competitors, laying down a marker for the upcoming IWF Worlds 2025.
What To Expect In The Women’s 48 kg At IWF Championships 2025
1. Rivals And Rematches
Returning to the 48 kg division, Chanu faces familiar – but fierce – competition. While her commanding Commonwealth win highlights her dominance, there’s anticipation surrounding how much her rivals have improved since her last international outing. Competitors from China, Taipei and rising talents from across Asia may mount serious challenges.
2. Strategic Edge And Preparation
Chanu’s revamped training and diet strategy, implemented for Ahmedabad and beyond, speaks volumes. Coupled with her competitive maturity, this could give her a strategic advantage, especially under the intense environment of the world stage.
Her psychological edge cannot be underestimated. Competing at home may have sharpened her focus and confidence – traits she’ll carry into the IWF Worlds 2025. Observers will be watching if she can translate her Commonwealth dominance into a podium finish in October.
