Lasha Talakhadze Elected President of Georgian Weightlifting Federation, New Era Begins
Author:
A new chapter begins for Georgian weightlifting — and for one of the sport’s most iconic figures. On April 1st, three-time Olympic champion Lasha Talakhadze was unanimously elected as the new President of the Georgian Weightlifting Federation. The vote took place during the electoral congress in Tbilisi, with all 55 delegates supporting the decision.
This leadership change places the future of Georgian weightlifting in the hands of the man who has become synonymous with modern super-heavyweight dominance.

From Record-Breaking Lifter to National Leader
Lasha Talakhadze’s name is etched into weightlifting history. With three Olympic gold medals (Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, Paris 2024), seven World Championships, and seven European titles, his career is unparalleled. Even more remarkable — he still holds the world records in the Snatch (225 kg), Clean & Jerk (267 kg), and Total (492 kg) in the +109 kg category.
His election as President of the Georgian Weightlifting Federation marks a rare moment when a current world record holder and Olympic champion steps directly into a governance role. For many fans and athletes, this is a signal that a new era of athlete-led leadership has begun.
Transition of Power: Kakhi Kakhiashvili Passes the Torch
Talakhadze succeeds Kakhi Kakhiashvili, another legendary figure in the sport and himself a three-time Olympic champion (Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000). Kakhiashvili led the federation for the past 10 years, guiding Georgia to global prominence in weightlifting.
He won’t be going far — Kakhiashvili will continue to serve as Vice-President, alongside fellow Olympian Irakli Turmanidze (Rio 2016 bronze medalist) and Nodar Sirbilashvili. Rusudani Muradashvili was also re-elected as Secretary General, ensuring continuity at the administrative level.
What Lasha’s Presidency Means for Georgian Weightlifting
Lasha’s deep understanding of the sport from an athlete’s perspective — combined with the respect he commands worldwide — gives him a unique advantage. His role now extends beyond the platform: he will lead national programs, support youth development, and help shape Georgia’s international strategy.
This is also a symbolic shift. The elevation of a still-active champion into the highest office of national sport management is a strong endorsement of trust in athletes to lead the sport’s future.
On behalf of Torokhtiy Media, we proudly congratulate Lasha Talakhadze on his well-deserved appointment as President of the Georgian Weightlifting Federation.
Lasha has already inspired a generation of lifters with his unmatched strength and discipline. Now, as a leader, we’re confident he will bring that same excellence to the next generation of Georgian and international weightlifters.
