IWF Weightlifting World Cup 2024 – Men’s 109+ kg Recap

Day 12, the final day of the 2024 World Cup in Phuket, displayed that the super heavyweight weightlifters were highly set to prevail their contenders and become closer to victory in this competition.

Eleven athletes in the 109+ kg weight division demonstrated their high determination and resilience to show the best results that will be harder to outperform further and outshine in this tough battle.

The gold medalist in the Men’s 109+ kg weight category became Lalayan Varazdat from Armenia who took the gold medal in today’s competition: he snatched 210 kg, 253 kg in Clean & Jerk, and a total of 463 kg.

The second place moved to Davoudi Ali from Iran who performed 454 kg in total, 202 kg in Snatch, and 252 kg in the Clean & Jerk discipline. 

Sharifikelarijani Ayat from Iran competing in Group B became a bronze medalist with the following results: 201 kg in Snatch, 246 kg in Clean & Jerk, and a total of 447 kg.

To sum up, the competition between these giants was thrilling and tense as the weight gap between the third and second places was minimal: one kilo in Snatch, six kilos in Clean & Jerk, and seven kilos in total.

While the weight cushion between the first and third spots is nine kilos in Snatch, seven kilos in Clean & Jerk, and sixteen kilos overall. The category’s constant warrior, an all-time world record holder in the category, six-time World and seven-time European champion, Lasha Talakhadze didn’t perform today despite being enlisted in the entry list of the competitors.

Top Athletes’ Review

The 109+ kg weight class gold medalist Lalayan Varazdat from Armenia, is a three-time medalist at the World Championships and a three-time medalist at the European Championships. By the way, today, he did his personal best in total by one kilo compared to the 2023 Europeans. In Clean & Jerk, he also improved his prior best result by 3 kilos.

The silver medalist Ali Davoudi from Iran, is a silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, is a two-time gold medalist at the Asian Championships, and a silver medal holder at the Asian Games. He improved his total by two kilos and did his best Clean & Jerk lift.

The bronze medal moved to his teammate Sharifikelarijani Ayat, previously he ranked eighth at the Worlds in Riyadh and seventh at the 2022 Worlds. Today he moved up much higher compared to his prior accomplishments resulting in bronze.

Snatch results:

Overall, there were half of the red lights in the scoreboard in the exercise: just one athlete, Iranian Sharifikelarijani performed all attempts successfully. So, here we have the ranking in the Snatch round:

  • 🥉Sharifikelarijani Ayat (IRI) – 201 kg

Clean & Jerk results:

In this exercise, five lifters refused to use their final attempts, while most of them were unsuccessful. Again the situation repeated as in Snatch: we witnessed lots of no-lifts. Thus, the Top athletes resulted with the following weights:
