As the 2024 IWF World Cup unfolds in Thailand, athletes are seizing the ultimate chance to solidify their ranking for the upcoming Olympic Games slated for later this summer.
With Olympic dreams dangling in the balance, expectations are high for a display of extraordinary performances at this critical juncture. Thankfully, the men’s 89 kg category delivered a plethora of exceptional outings.
One of the great performances of the day was by Yeison Lopez from Columbia. In the Snatch event, he was exceptional, lifting 175 kg on his first attempt, watching his competitor set a world record of 181 kg, and then lifting 182 kg on his final attempt, which meant winning the gold medal for that lift and setting a new World Record at the 89 kg category.

During the Clean & Jerk, Lopez also led the rankings, but unfortunately, he missed his final attempt of 215 kg and finished in second place for that lift, with a silver medal. Even though, he had an overall fantastic performance, his total of 392 kg was enough to get him the silver medal.
So far in his career, Lopez has represented Columbia in the World Championships, Olympic Games, and Pan American Championships. He’s yet to win a big title, but his current form and performance make him one of the contenders for the podium in Paris.
