Bulgaria to Host 2024 European Senior Weightlifting Championships

The European Weightlifting Federation has postponed the European Senior Championships, scheduled for 2024. It will now be managed by the Bulgarian Weightlifting Federation. It is the one that won the right to host this competition. It is also an Olympic qualifying tournament for the games to be held in Paris 2024. 

Bulgaria is basically famous for weightlifting. Let’s look back at the 1972 Olympic Games. The very first weightlifting medal there was won by Bulgarian citizen Norair Nurikyan. Later, other Bulgarian citizens in the person of Andon Nikolov and Yordan Bikov supplemented the national results with their medals. Now Bulgaria has a record of 37 Olympic medals in weightlifting.

History also remembers Bulgaria holding exemplary weightlifting championships. The country has hosted 14 European Championships and 6 World Championships in its history. Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia, has been the center of 8 European Championships. Other major Bulgarian cities have also distinguished themselves with their ability to organize for exemplary world competitions.

Meeting at the Ministry of Sports, Sofia, Bulgaria

The leadership of the Weightlifting Federation has already held talks with the decision makers from Bulgaria, who have agreed to host the events on their territory. They have also stated that their goal is to hold such a weightlifting event that will go down in history. Let’s see what will happen in Sofia 2024 and how exemplary this event will be.
