Lucy McGonigle Breaks Nine British Weightlifting Records

Up until now, Lucy McGonigle was a new name in the world of weightlifting. But after this weekend, she has cemented her spot as an absolute phenom at Olympic Weightlifting.

The 17-year-old, who already held three U17 British weightlifting national records in the under 64kg category, moved up to the 71kg category this weekend for the Northern Ireland Weightlifting Championships. And even though, for most people, changing categories might require an adjustment, that wasn’t the case for Lucy, who wreaked havoc on the floor.  She ended up finishing the competition with 108kg clean & jerk, 85kg snatch, and a total of 193kg.

Those numbers were good enough for her to break not only one or two but a total of nine British national weightlifting records. In fact, after this weekend, she’s the 71kg record holder in three separate decisions for the snatch, clean & jerk, and total – in the U17, U20, and U23, a spectacular achievement at any rate.
