Grand Prix Champion, Pan-American Medallist
Janeth Gómez Valdivia, born October 26th, 1997, in San Miguel el Alto, Jalisco, Mexico, is a Mexican weightlifter competing in the 59 kg weight class. Known for her steady rise through national, Pan-American, and international competitions, she has established herself as one of Mexico’s leading female lifters.
Janeth began weightlifting at the age of 11 and was recruited by the state sports program (CODE) in Guadalajara, where she moved to train at a higher level. By age 14, she had earned her first medal in a Central American competition, and at 15 she reached the podium in her first junior-level world event, demonstrating her potential from a young age.
Her breakthrough at the international senior level came in 2023 at the IWF Grand Prix in Havana, where she claimed two gold medals and one silver in the 59 kg class – lifting 98 kg in snatch, 125 kg in clean&jerk, and totaling 223 kg. This performance elevated her Olympic ranking and positioned her as a serious contender on the world stage.
In February 2024, at the Pan-American Weightlifting Championships in Caracas, she won bronze in snatch (100 kg) and silver in clean&jerk (121 kg) and total (221 kg), confirming her status as Mexico’s top female lifter in her category. These results qualified her for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, making her the sole Mexican weightlifter representing the country in the sport.
At her Olympic debut in Paris 2024, Janeth finished 8th in the 59 kg category, with lifts of 95 kg in snatch and 122 kg in clean&jerk for a 217 kg total. While she did not medal, her top‑10 finish marked her arrival among the world’s elite and highlighted her competitive potential at the highest level.
Janeth Gómez Valdivia’s best competition lifts include 100 kg in snatch, 125 kg in clean&jerk. At 26 years old, she is already a Grand Prix champion, Pan-American medallist, and Olympian. Her journey – from a small town in Jalisco to the Olympic stage – demonstrates her dedication, resilience, and technical skill. Janeth continues to inspire aspiring weightlifters in Mexico and across Latin America, showing that with consistent effort and determination, reaching the top of the sport is possible.
