Before the Start

As the 89 kg class nears its end with new Olympic categories looming (79, 88 and 99), the competition drew extra attention. Several athletes, including Chinese star LI Dayin and emerging talent PAN Yunhua, used this stage to prove themselves in front of the home crowd.

This weight class has seen historic totals and world records — most notably from Bulgaria’s Karlos Nasar — and today’s competition reminded us why.

Meet the Athletes

  • LI Dayin (CHN), former world record holder and one of China’s most muscular and technically sound athletes, returned to international stage after missing out on the Olympics.
  • PAN Yunhua (CHN), only 19, already a junior record holder in Clean & Jerk and Total, showed signs of becoming the next Chinese weightlifting icon.
  • SHERER Yegor (KAZ) shocked with a massive 15 kg snatch jump and consistent C&Js.
  • LIM Kang Yin (SGP) earned respect and an international best, carrying the flag for emerging programs.
  • AMUR AL-KHANJARI (OMA) marked Oman’s first appearance in the championship.
  • MD SHAKAYET HOSSAIN PRANTO (BAN) and ASSYLZHAN BEKTAY (KAZ) had tough days, failing to register a total.

Snatch Session: Power, Misses, and Milestones

The snatch session opened with four consecutive no-lifts, setting a chaotic tone. PRANTO failed all three 115 kg attempts, followed by AL-KHANJARI’s three misses at 157 kg. LIM Kang Yin steadied nerves with a personal best of 136 kg, overcoming early nerves to go 2-for-3.

SHERER opened at 150 and took a risky failed +10 (160) kg  jump and then even more risky +5 kg jump to 165 kg — however this decision paid off with a bronze. PAN Yunhua posted two clean lifts up to 163 kg, narrowly missing 167. YU Dongju (KOR) looked solid (3-of-3), finished at 164 but couldn’t break into medals.

RO Kwang Ryol lifted 160, 165, and then 168 kg, putting pressure on LI Dayin. LI, known for clinical precision, opened with 170 kg and nailed 176 kg on his second. Surprisingly, he passed on a third attempt, citing possible injury concerns. He still secured snatch gold.

Clean & Jerk: Records, Drama, and Domination

PAN Yunhua lit up the stage in Clean & Jerk, opening with 202 kg and finishing with a stunning 209 kg, setting a new Asian Junior Record. He missed a shot at 213 kg but had already shined at this competition.

RO Kwang Ryol was unmatched in consistency: 210 kg, 212 kg, and a failed 219 kg attempt. He 212 secured gold.

After a strong 203 kg opener, LI Dayin failed twice at 210 kg. The crowd’s silence spoke volumes—China’s favorite had let the title slip. It seems that he got a lower back injury.

SHERER added 180 kg for a 345 kg total and finished fifth. AL-KHANJARI found redemption with a 191 kg lift after a snatch bomb-out.
