The 2025 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Jiangshan opened the stage for Asia’s strongest women to prove themselves, and none did so more boldly than the ten athletes of the Women’s 64 kg category. Held at the state-of-the-art Hushan Sports Park, the competition featured rising talents, seasoned medalists, and dramatic turns from the first lift to the last.

Fans packed the stands as the Womenโ€™s 64 kg category unfolded on May 11. With lifters from China, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Taiwan, Malaysia, Mongolia, and Hong Kong, it was a true regional battle.

Who Competed: Meet the Athletes

LI Shuang (CHN), born in 2004, came into this session not only as a favorite but also as a representative of Chinaโ€™s youth wave. She had shown strong domestic results but hadnโ€™t yet stamped her name internationally. She won a bronze medal on last Worlds in 2024. Elreen Ann Ando (PHI) returned to the platform after a silver medal on Asian Championships last year. Mun Minhee (KOR), one of the oldest in the field at 29, had earned a few regional podium finishes but was still chasing her first major gold medal on the continental stage.

  • LI Shuang (CHN): 19-year-old phenom, third at 2024 Worlds.
  • Elreen Ann ANDO (PHI): Olympian and world stage veteran.
  • MUN Minhee (KOR): Former 71kg Asian bronze medalist, now rebuilt in 64s.
  • AN Sisung (KOR): Experienced but less decorated, making a return after a long break.
  • DEVI Seram Nirupama (IND): Indian debutant (in Senior) with excellent domestic numbers.
  • RADZI Nur Syazwani (MAS) and TIAN Xin-Jie (TPE): Both had prior international experience, but still hungry for medals.
  • KHATANZORIG Buyannemekh (MGL), CHENG Ching To (HKG), APRILIA Nadita (INA): International debutantes

Snatch Recap: LI Shuang Opens Strong, Others Battle for Podium

The snatch session opened with smooth lifting from the lower-ranked athletes. HKGโ€™s CHENG Ching To, despite a timing mishap before her opener, recovered to finish with a 66kg in a third lift. Mongoliaโ€™s KHATANZORIG Buyannemekh impressed with her speed and fight, eventually finishing with 77kg.

Things heated up as the top lifters entered. MUN Minhee opened confidently with 90 kg snatch and finish withed with 94kg, a big moment of redemption after her 2024 Worlds bomb out.

ANDO matched expectations with a 102kg snatch, making her first two attempts before missing 105 on last one.

LI Shuang, however, was in a league of her own. She opened at 105kg, made it look routine, but missed her next two at 109kg. Still, the 105kg was enough for gold.
