The Training Behind a World Record: Podcast Discussing Nurudinov’s Preparation

What does the training behind a 242 kg world-record clean & jerk actually look like? What was the focus of Sergii`s Putsov recent podcast conversation with Brian Chambers and Calvin Lackey.

We took a deep dive into the preparation of Olympic champion Ruslan Nurudinov leading into the Worlds 2024 World – not from a theoretical perspective, but using his actual training data.

What We Discussed

The conversation gave us an opportunity to look behind the final result and discuss what really happens during the preparation of an elite weightlifter. We talked about Ruslan’s training structure, the relationship between volume and intensity, exercise selection, heavy lifting, accessory work and how the training changed as the World Championships approached.

One of the key topics was how different elite-level preparation can look compared with what people often expect. It is easy to imagine that a world-record holder spends most of his time performing heavy snatches, clean & jerks and squats.

The reality is much more complex. A significant part of Ruslan’s preparation included accessory exercises, general strength work, mobility, prehab and recovery. All of these elements helped support the competition lifts and allowed him to manage the accumulated training stress throughout the preparation.

Building Performance vs. Showing Performance

Another important part of our discussion was the progression of training across the cycle. At the beginning and middle of a preparation, the goal is largely to build the physical qualities needed for performance.

Closer to competition, the objective changes. You cannot continue accumulating fatigue and expect your best performance on competition day. Training volume has to decrease, intensity has to be managed and the athlete needs enough recovery to finally express the strength and technical ability developed during the previous weeks. This balance between training stimulus and fatigue is one of the most interesting things to observe in Ruslan’s preparation.

We also discussed an important question:

Can another weightlifter simply copy Ruslan Nurudinov’s training?
The answer is no.

Ruslan is an Olympic champion with decades of experience in the sport. His ability to tolerate training volume, frequency and intensity has been developed over many years. The real educational value is not in copying every exercise or percentage.

Instead, coaches should ask:

Why was this exercise selected?
Why did the volume change during this week?
Why was intensity increased or reduced?
How was fatigue managed?
What changed as the competition became closer?

Understanding these decisions is much more valuable than simply repeating the numbers.
